7747 ECM - any way to change the tune without having to solder?

Post by AwesomeJ10 »

I installed a 7747 TBI onto nikkormat's junk last night and I had to give him the ECM from the Honcho.

Anyways - I've bricked a few 7747's and I think it's because I can't solder very well and I mess up the daughter card. They run for a while, then kinda die.

Is there any other company like Moates that sells GM TBI stuff, perhaps with something that allows changing the tune?

I may be mistaken, I am still pretty new to this. but the 7427 you can get by without soldering. Has something to do with it using 28 pin chips from the factory. Moates has an adapter that plugs right into the board and then gives you a spot for a ZIF/etc. Of course that doesn't help with your 7747 TBIs, but you can always upgrade to the 7427 if that was your fancy.

I forgot about the 7427...I think that would be your best bet. Its very similar to my 93 LT1 ECU and I use the moates adapter and it works pretty well. Pretty sure you just have to repin the ECU connectors.

I didn't even look at the prices on those dynamic efi units...but there a lot of pretty cool features. I havn't looked at their site in years...moved on to more advance EFI systems.

Bring em up here, Blake. I have a nice temp controlled iron. When used properly, it won't lift pads.

Yes. You can buy the 7747 style chips that can be erased, get a UV eraser for $35, and then with the Moates program the Bin in to them.

We just need to teach Blake that soldering requires a different amount of heat than WELDING. LOL!

The EPROMS (UV erasable) have a limited # of times that they can be erased. EEPROMs also have a limit, but that limit is so high that you'll never reach it. And you can get EEPROMs from Moates instead of having to scour eBay for old EPROMs

You can simply use a modified 27SF512 with some pins soldered together. Plugs right in with slight mod.
No adapters, ecm soldering, or UV chip stuff needed.
Just need to burn a .bin to the chip and done.

The easy way is all covered on the binderplanet.com
I do not change the socket in the ecm. When you do it is no longer a factory ecm so you can't just swap it out if it fails on the road.
So then what's the point of running a factory system!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

C'mon, Sean. Just learn to solder. :- p

They put you in charge of 40 tons of steel. Surely you can handle a pencil iron.

I think I'm gonna repin my 7747 harness to accept the 7427 PCM and start tuning that.

Nikkormat - did you end up with my spare 7747 ECM? If so, you can keep it, but I will be needing the moates back here in the next few weeks...

I've still got your old reliable 7747 wrapped in tinfoil on my back seat. I'll figure out a time to drop of the moates. I should be passing through on my way to fort collins a few times.

HA! I can solder but only if the iron is powered by a CAT 3406

I'll be attempting mine here in a week or so, just got a box from Mr Moates today and learning me some stuff.
