HOWELL SPEED SENSOR TOO LONG TO CONNECT

I'm having a Howell TBI installed right now on my '76 Wagoneer. The mechanics have run into a problem - the speed sensor does not directly match up with the speedometer cable and they cannot make it connect.

What's the remedy for this? Rig up a short wire to connect the two or find a shorter speedo cable?

Does this make sense? Are we missing something?

The Howell instructions state:
"This lead contains power and ground for the frame
mounted fuel pump. The VSS is adapted to the transfer case speedometer cable
drive output. To install, remove the speedometer cable and thread VSS in series
of the transfer case and speedometer cable and attach VSS connector to
harness."

The speedo cable can be moved back and forth. Just push it up some, it will curve some more up front, but I do not see why this is an issue. its not rigid, just a bit stiff. If need be, grab hold of it up front and pull on it.
