March 20 Jumbo Grade Trail Run (Reno, NV)

Post by Renodemona »

Greetings FSJers!
A date has been thrown out and accepted for a Springtime trial run up here in Reno! March 20, a Sunday, for some trail, some lunch, and some Jeep socializing. Jumbo Grade trail retraces the path of one of the old toll roads that lead up to Virginia City from old Washoe City. The trail isn't too difficult and is suitable for stock vehicles with good ground clearance. FSJs with functional 4x4 are enough. Unless there is mud should only be one or two spots that you need to engage the transfer case at all.

https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mi ... U&hl=en_US

As you can see it is a fairly short trail but there is a nice loop in the middle that would add about 50% more trail to ride. There is also the old Toll road back down into south Reno that we can do on the way down.

Might I suggest meeting at Lamp Post Pizza at 11-1130 for delicious lunch, general FSJ activities, photos, repairs, and photos:

Even with trail detours an easy afternoon back into Reno by 4 to get the out-of-towners home at a reasonable hour. Sound good?

It's on my calendar but as always, things can break between now and then.

Looking through my trails book, if it is too snowy/muddy as it gets closer I have a couple other options. One down in Washoe Valley up past an old mining site, and the other through a forest area used for hiking access. Both would be stock GW friendly.

Was just reading the hunter lake page posted above, and it says it is open from April to November?

PS: Would like to get out that way for a run at some point, but has to be after the passes are open.

Did a bit of recon last weekend, and 99% sure it will be closed. Going to do Jumbo Grade Trail up from Washoe Valley into Virginia City. Not a tough trail unless its super muddy, but should be fun and good for stock GW to handle.

Not as of yet. I guess I should decide a lunch place and publish some trail info. I love Pizza. But there's other choices in the south end of town. :-bd

Jumbo Grade doesn't have a gate anymore, only the Ophir Road on the Carson side.
