Almost back to the garage.... made it back to Cali in 26hrs including a 2hr nap in Nev. Too much gas boiling between Green River and Price... after waiting fir the gas to cool called AAA but the 3 gallons did not help... 10 min on and 10 min rest... made it to Price and refilled w 8 gallons. Stopped twice to SLC.... so I decided to drive all night... no problems... the colder weather was a gift... even went up Donner pass at the speed limit.... + 5... of course after idling for 3 min before the agricultural inspection station I could smell the gas boiling.... and made it to next ramp... where I cooled off.... and enjoyed some late breakfast.... early lunch at 10am munching on Martin's bbq chicken.... scrumptious...thanx a lot....
Then headed for my favorite campsite in the sierras for 5 days of hiking... Spending now a few days at a friend's cabin and moving the fuel pump.... in 99F.... fun fun fun....
Thank you for the memories and to the new friends we made on the trip.
P.S: the merco fan did not improve gas mileage... report to be added on the proper post. Disconnecting the vscuum advance was or is a good power enhancer... running 16 degrees.... but still abive 4000'.

I feel your pain Michel. :(

Only fool proof way I've discovered to get rid of vapor lock every time is to remove the hood.

I typically only vapor lock between Gallup and Cortez with an option to vapor lock on I40 from holbrook and somewhat past Cortez. It's the longer drives that seem to get me.
This year and last I avoided vapor lock on these stretches. One trick was to avoid hitting them in the hottest part of the day. I kind of got lucky on the way home this year, it rained some. The temps still hit in the 90's but no hint of vapor lock.
The other trick I think really helped is I tried to roll into Cortez with as empty of a tank as possible. There is a Sinclair gas station on the east side of town, just north of where the 491 and 160 intersect. Their gas does not contain any ethonal. Ethonal has a lower boiling temp.

I need a copilot them to reinstall the hood. The hood vents are really the way to go... some stuffed wood sticks at the cowl keeping the rear part of the hood slightly ajar...

I tried adding MMO but that did not help at all... I did not dare to put some diesel gas as suggested by one of the jeep tour guide.... but the hood trick is probably the best bet with a lower thermostat for the summer... 180ish instead of 195.

The other casualty of the trip .... the brake rotor dust shield finally came loose on the last leg, of course it is puzzling as you leave your friend's place and a loud rasp welcome you on the first turn... forgotten tool, loose nuts taking a french leave... naaaah, the loose nut is behind the wheel...

And I wanted to replace the missing one on my jeep, now I have to consider taking the remaining one off.

If you are going to off road your Jeep take the dust cover off. They are just good for catching rock
and causing problems.
