There were a few of us on a mission to Ouray last month. For a variety of reasons, Tad and I were the only ones to make it to Ouray. There was a little snow and ice on roads from my place in Mancos to Ouray in the morning so we waited to come up in the afternoon on Thursday. Friday morning we hoofed it over to Olathe on Hwy 50 about an hour from Ouray. We were checking out options at Gunnison Gorge. Turns out there are some Jeep trails there. We picked up a map at the Ute Trailhead (hiking) that showed more than what we found on-line before the trip. It was only a couple miles up the Ute Trail road. We determined it would be worthwhile to come back and try some of the trails.
We caught up with Beth in Ridgeway for a beer on the way back to more beer in Ouray. The next morning Tad headed home and I went to check on Yankee Boy trail before heading home. The two track was rough beginning around a mile or so before the last bathroom. Mostly erosion from water running across the trail. I didn't go beyond the bathroom because I'm not in the habit of going it alone on snow packed and icy trails. It was a beautiful morning though!!! I had never been there in October before. September is probably a better month to run some Ouray trails in the Fall.
We missed you Jerry. We missed Sean too. He blew a radiator hose with his Eagle on Monarch and had to head back east. We should plan something for next September. Like the third week sometime.
Totally missed this thread (ok, I don’t prowl here much anymore).
Looking forward to running the complete ridge trail in September.
