SE NC - 83 Cherokee Pioneer w/ 258/T177/NP208

Postby Billybob535 » Sun Nov 11, 2018 2:04 pm

My child got hurt at school the other day so to cover the medical expenses I have to sell the Cherokee I bought for my mercedes diesel project. I purchased it from a member of the Full Size Jeep Enthusiasts group on Facebook earlier this year. He got it from a small car lot in central Florida that didn't want to mess with it. They put the new tires on it but did nothing else. The story was that it sat somewhere for a long time. I bought it with the intent of using the chassis with my diesel drivetrain and replacing the body with a clean one later on. The body has rust above and below the windshield, in both drivers side and passenger side footwells, both fresh air vents, behind the dash on the drivers side, and in front of the rear seat along with the rear lower quarters and drivers door. The paint is flaking off in a few places as it was a poor job. They even painted over the Pioneer stickers. The interior is in poor condition. I put duct tape over the holes around the windshield before Hurricane Florence and that stopped almost all the major water intrusion so I left it there. The vehicle was not flooded during the storm.

The good:

Clean GA title signed by the RO and ready to transfer
258 seems to run smooth once started
I replaced the starter with a Bosch reman unit
I replaced the starter solenoid and battery cable
I replaced the battery with one from Feb 2018
I replaced the alternator belt and power steering belt
I replaced the fuel pump, steel line from pump to filter, filter, rubber lines to/from filter, and clamps.
I did not replace the steel line from filter to carb but the new steel line is included.
The carb is a 2100 from a 68 mustang 289 (1.14) with a manual choke conversion and unknown adapter kit.
I installed a new power valve, cover gasket, acellerator pump, and the top gasket from a Walker rebuild kit. The carb does not leak and the rest of the kit is included.
It has an aftermarket cast aluminum valve cover.
I installed a new power steering return line and clamps.
The frame is in excellent condition with no visible rot or problems.
It has a 2" receiver hitch miunted to the frame.
The aluminum slot wheels are very nice but the center caps are gone.
The 31x10.50R15 tires are in excellent condition. The front have almost no miles and the rear have a few hundred from being towed from S Ga to SE NC.
The rear window works off the dash switch (no key).
The front Dana 44 axle is not a disconnect version.
The rear is the model 20.
I believe it has 3.31 gears but I did not pull the covers to verify it.
It has the factory T-177 and NP208.
The rear driveshaft has been removed as I towed it with a dolly but is included.
I have new front caliper hoses, rear brake hose, and new wheel cylinders for it that are not installed.

The not good:

The valve cover gasket seeps oil but does not lose enough to drip on the ground.
The reverse light switch is stuck so the backup lights are on when the key is on.
The brakes only work at the very bottom of the pedal.
One of the headlights is out and I have not tested the high beams.
The horn does not work.
The door locks are stuck and the ignition key does not fit the locks.
I have not rolled the rear window down all the way or opened the tailgate.

I have not looked into any of the issues listed above. I am not going to now since I have to sell it.

The carb needs more attention as it is hard to start and idles too fast. This was the current issue I was working on but I will not be doing any more work on it. I will be starting it and letting it run every day or 2 just to keep the fuel moving and battery charged.

I have just over $2000 invested in it as it sits. I will sell it for what I have in it. Cash only no trades. Must pick up in Shallotte NC. I could deliver it up to 2 hours away for $100 cash. If someone wanted it without the wheels and tires I would sell it without them for $400 less.

Will post pics and videos of it running shortly.

I went out and started it and it started on the second try. Ran good and I decided to test the lights. Both headlights now work and all the running lights work. I did not test the high beams as the floor switch looks rough. Turn signals and flashers on instrument cluster, front grille, front fenders, and rear tailights work. The rear side lights do not blink with the turn signals or flashers (not sure if they are supposed to). The reverse lights are no longer on all the time (I drove it around the yard a bit so maybe that let the switch snap back into place). No helper so I did not test them or the brake lights.

I need to get this sold so I can prep my YJ to be sold too. If someone is interested and has the $2k cash I will throw in the complete Astro hydroboost setup for it. That includes the used 95 Astro van booster, new master cylinder, new pressure lines, new return line, new stainless clamps, new inline filter, new cooler, firewall spacer, and pedal stud busing (all of it uninstalled). This stuff plus the 3 hoses and wheel cylinders will complete the setup. PM me if interested. I will not sell the parts separate and I am not interested in trades or parting out.

Sold the grille to a friend so the price is reduced to $1700. If it doesn't sell by March I will be cutting up the body for scrap and parting it out.
