1988 Grand Wagoneer - new wood pictures advice to all on new wood

Post by 88BuffYellowFSJ »

Hello. I am new to this fsj forum. I thought I would share my new wood grain. I have an 88 grand wag , buff yellow 121k, no rust, bought her a while back from Tenn doctor, he kept her pristine, all records etc,.. Southern gentleman. Imported her to Cape cod. The wood was dry cracked and faded. I debated the full trim and wood redu. Spoke with all the " experts" (wagonman, Norbert, the Texas boys etc,..) I respect all of their opinions. After a lot of thought. Decided on keeping the original trim , I did not like the replacement trim from our fiends at teamgrandwagoneer. It's nice but not original. To,flimsy and no "holes" :) , looks wrong to me. Their wood grain I feel has been perfected nicely. So I sanded off the old and smoothed out the surface and replaced with teamgrandwagoneer new wood 3m stickers, tucked it nice under the trim. They have done a nice job in my opinion, continuous grain. So thee are many opinions out there , just thought I would share my good experience. Happy to share more details , tricks etc, Also , just added my new/old Marchal Fogs , I found on ebay , as mine we're trashed :)

Mdcptman. I did not remove the trim. I was advised not to by several folks who sell their Wags for a lot more than mine cost ( our Texas friends) and it was great advice. The trim will bend and you can never get it on again the same way. There is one person I found in Florida who claims will sell you oem trim that he has redone , you just need to send him yours you take off. I did not want to do this either. I was told of the trim is good , never replace or take off. You need to make sure the surface is absolutely smooth, then tuck the new wood under the trim, there is enough separation to tuck it under. Good luck.

That turned out really good! Thanks for sharing the advice for applying the new wood decal without removing the trim. I'm going to remember that. So, exactly which wood panel kit did you by from Team Grand Wagoneer? I've got the same color and may want to replace my wood some day.
