Modified the boom so it could be raised, originally, you lifted it up and put a pin in it and thats where it stayed.

Image

Had to weld up some cracks in the corners, notch the insides of the boxes to clear the leaf packs, and widened the tail gate 6".

Image

An personalize it... :-bd

We also shot the front with color, now its ready to mount an hopefully get this poor thing one color...

Thanks guys, last night I emptied the old box so I can push it off, hook the wrecker to the front of the new bed and back the truck under... Image

Man I wish I had the group help you Tucson guys have... Image

I unbolted the boxes off the old bed and my son and I carried them off. Fired up the wrecker and backed it over the back, hoisted it up, and drove the J20 out, then set the bed back down. Turned the wrecker around and hooked up to the front of the new bed and as I tightened it, the extension bar was bending. With the tension on it, I tried to lift it and could not budge it. Time for plan "B"...

Got my train jack out and lifted the front of the bed another 12" and moved the blocks to the outside. Ran a 10" piece of 4" x 1/4" angle under it, and backed the truck up to it. I laid 2 strips of plywood end to end and overlapped them about 2"s. Jacked the truck up, pulled the rear tires and let the jack down. Hooked a chain to the jack, and a come along to the front of the Willys, and pulled the truck under the bed, then jacked it up and put the tires back on. My new neighbor behind me had to come over and tell me how impressed he was and that he thoroughly enjoyed watching me.

Got the front 2 mounts welded on and the back 2 aligned, then focused on reinstalling the fuel tank until dark. Got it in, just have to plumb it, the fill neck is going to be challenging.

Enough chat, heres proof...

So does the new bed weigh a lot more, or was there some other reason the wrecker could not lift it?

Love how the tail gate came out :)

Maybe it's just me, but that looks factory! Those boxes are at the local wrecking yard fairly often. If you need doors, or lock, left me know and I'll snag you some.

Thanks guys. I have the locks, they are just out for paint. :D Its in really good shape. everything works well. :-bd

Yes, this bed is VERY heavy. Will have to add a couple of leafs to help it.

The old one was literally a step side bed with boxes bolted to it. There is rust stains from the original fenders, and the drivers side has a hole and sticker that reads unleaded fuel only. That explains why it was falling apart. There are cracks at every joint. I definitely got my moneys worth out of it. I'll get some pics of it.

The tail gate was the second favorite part, the boom being the first. My back is going to love it... Image

Well, we have some color on, a lot more real estate then I thought. One gallon did not go far enough, will have to get another to finish. All day Sat preping and taping, then did primer and paint Sun, and I drove it home last night. :-bd I think I'm going to rattle can these old doors that are still on the truck so they are not so obvious. The new doors have electric windows and locks... 8-)

Looking good being one color (minus old doors). And wow, you have thick front leaf packs!

Is something wrong with your hood?

LOL, the front leafs were there when I got the truck, and held the Caddy engine well, so I left them. For now.

Everyone was looking for ways to vent their hoods to cool the engine bay down. At the time, I was doing lots of hyway driving and the added venting helped. I drilled holes into 1" square tubing and put them between the hood and hinge. Completely reversible. ;) Should be pics here somewhere...

Got the doors painted last week and spent Sunday installing the drivers side. Ran into quite a few issues that make putting the newer ('85) doors onto the '75. The latches went in ok, but I have to raise the key hole up the size of the hole. :banghead: Also had to do a bunch of tweaking to the linkage for the inside handle, it would not swing far enough to unlatch the door. I spent so much time, I still have to do the passy door.

Heres what the drivers side looks like in one color... :D

Wow, 4.5 years and I finally have it all one color. There were times I wondered if it would ever get that far.

Image

Image

I got the bumper that came with the bed, but cut it down to my taste. I took 1" out of the top so the bottom of the bumper is even with the bottom of the boxes, and 2" out of the depth, it stuck out 11" before. Added a receiver hitch and need a couple chain loops and it should be good to go. :-bd

Image

And both doors now have electric windows and locks. Now I need to figure out how to make the tumbler line up with the inside latch, both bottom screws are in the way. Turns out the key hole on newer doors ('85) is that they dropped it half a hole down from where it is on the '70s doors. :banghead: Hopefully dremeling off the ends of the screws will work. Dont want to have to fill holes to drill again. :banghead:

Thanks, it been a fun build. Still doing little things to it all the time. Just borrowed the tuning hardware to try to get a little more out of this Caddy. :-bd
