Winter is a comin

Post by 1971J4000 »

October 1st and we are already getting ready to hunker down here in New York State... time to start winterizing the Gladiator... another month & she will be off the road until Spring.

Crazy how time flies...

Gonna dress it up a bit before winter... found an OEM NOS original set of mud flaps with the original Kaiser J e e p logo and the rear fender flare guards .

Will post new pic when all is installed.

Dang that thing is SHARP!!!

I have been getting my half cab ready to put on the Scrambler for winter. It'll see snow duty unless I can get the waggy running better.

What an incredibly good looking J4000! I remember the build thread from a while back.

If you are the owner who did the restoration, did you replace any parts of the wiring harness? If so, I'm specifically interested in what you might have used as a kit for the harness under the dash. Or, by any chance, did you make your own harness?

Also, I have the same Warn/Belleview winch and bumper on my truck, but the trim plates or horizontally-oriented steel plates that bolt to the top edge of the bumper are missing. It seems like most of these bumpers had them or perhaps owners added them. Are yours bolted to the body/front valence by any chance? I'm not sure if there would be too much body flex between the bumper and body to allow this, so I though perhaps those plates hung free and only bolted to the bumper. Thanks in advance for any details you might have.

Yes I am the owner who did the exterior restoration...

But nothing was done at all to the interior. This is exactly the way I purchased it and as far as we know it is exactly the way it came originally from the factory (except the 3 guages and the a/c were installed by prior owner and I installed the Jeep glove box clock).

We do not believe the interior was ever restored... just well preserved.

We have all of the prior owners' service records and no wiring has ever been changed to the best of our knowledge.

Here are a few pics of the Winch bumper. I have a triangular shaped tow attachment that connects to the pins you see to the left & right of the fairlead and then allows you to connect to a 2 inch ball on the back of another vehicle for flat towing the Gladiator.

You can see it in the bed of the Jeep in this next picture.

Image

I will put it on tomorrow & take a picture of it installed. Not sure if that was standard with this bumper or something someone added later... but it is pretty cool.

I will take more detailed pictures of the winch bumper and add them to this post tomorrow.

Wow! Thank you very much! I guess I don't remember that older thread as well as I thought I did! What an amazing truck and perfect example of preserving an original vehicle.

December 1970.

Could very likely have been one of the last Kaiser Jeeps or one of the 1st AMC.

The truck was originally ordered from Jeep in 1970 by the owner of a Jeep dealership in Seattle.

It spent its first 40 or so years in Seattle & then eventually found its way to Arizona and then to me in New York State.

Prior owner was meticulous with detail for any changes or repairs... and I have done my best to continue keeping it as original as possible.

Even still has the original Motorola 35 AMP alternator & Motorola voltage regulator.

Those pics are perfect, thanks! I also see that previous owner of my truck welded a few extra things on my bumper.

Do you have photos of the bumper mounts? I’m just curious. I put a warn winch bumper on the front of mine by copying photos of the original mounts. I think twisted frame sent me photos of his and I got some detailed high res photos from John Cappa as well. It was interesting to me how simple they are.

There is a scrapyard 40 miles from me that has 8 or 9 Jeep pickups & Wagoneers from the 60s & 70s era that still have a lot of usable parts.

New York State so anything that would normally rust is probably shot.

Anyway next week I am taking my nephew on a tour of this 30+ acre all in the woods old school junkyard. Many vehicles from the 30s 40s all the way up to the late 70s.

A few Jeep Willys PickUps out there too.

We will be taking closeup pictures of all of the J Trucks & Wagoneers and will be posting those pictures in the FSJ Parts Sales section of this forum.

Members can look over the pics to see if they see anything usable... and my nephew and I will take a Gladiator Road Trip to the same yard again in 2-3 weeks to pull whatever parts people have expressed an interest in. Yard owner is a good guy to work with so hopefully we can get the parts on the cheap.

Please check the FSJ Parts Sales section after the 18th of October.

These fender guards are New Old Stock AMD and I am not certain if the fender guards were a Kaiser era product too... I think I remember in Kaiser era that people were spraying a rubber coating on the fenders to keep paint from chipping.

Because this is the last year of the Kaiser era truck and I am trying to keep it as original & period correct as possible... I prefer not to put them on if they are AMC era only.

Does anyone know the answer?

Either way if I do decide to install them... I am not drilling any holes. I will use some king of removable adhesive caulking and clip the top off some stainless screws and glue them over the screw holes so it has the appearance of being bolted... without the holes in the flairs...

Now these babies are for sure Kaiser era. Took me a lonnnnnggggg time to hunt these up.

Image

I have 4 of them but I am thinking of just putting them on the front for now.

Again it will be a no holes drilled install. I am designing a mounting bracket for them.

I know you are always interested in the yellow tags on the door columns & where the trucks end up.
