Beavis & Butthead

****Update***: Photobucket can die a painful death. Trying out IMGUR until i find something easier to host with.

My girlfriend used to call me a butt-head when we started dating. I suppose I would push her buttons with my shenanigans. Then I drug home this rusty POS J10. We spend so much time together that it was only fitting to name the truck Beavis. I cleaned it up enough to leave in the driveway while under progress.

Specs:
1980 J10 shortbed, 258, 4 speed manual, NP208, D44 & AMC 20, 3.54 gears.

Mods:
4" Lift, 285/75R17(33") Goodyear Duratracs, round headlight swap. hacked off the rusted and dented flares, and painted it hunter green.

Intentions are to keep things relatively inexpensive for now. We use it as a beach and ranch truck.

And I towed this home yesterday. I figure its better to have a cancer-free & dent-free platform to begin with. Plus the interior is there and the electrical hasn't been completely haggard.

My plans are to swap the best of both trucks into the new truck. I am on the fence about whether to swap the 258/T158/NP208 into this truck as I like the 258 and a manual for reliability.

I'm currently in the process of cleaning up wiring on the J10. Installed a new fuse block and chasing wires for the new harness. Ordered an aluminum fan shroud from BJs and a bunch of little things from Rock Auto.

The 360 lives!!!!

Now I wait for my rockauto delivery. I am missing a radiator, working fuel pump, new hoses and the sort. I need to figure out how to get the timing cover-to-water pump gasket to not leak. It appears there is some corrosion on the top portion of the timing cover that is about 1/8th of an inch into the gasket mating area. Really don't want to replace that part until i can deem if the 360 is healthy enough for weekend trail duty.

Also, the seller included an aluminum 4 bbl manifold and a Holley 4 bbl carb of some sort. I really don't know Holleys carbs at all. Would it be beneficial to replace the OEM motorcraft carb with this set-up? i am mostly interested in reliability. The stock carb is perfectly clean and functions fine.

If something is functioning with no issues, I've learned to not screw with it. :-bd

you can try to clean up the area to remove oil and coolant -need to drain coolant to get it below the level of the missing part- use acetone to remove any grease stains. Try to rtv or any gasket maker, check the specs, some rtv are better than others, and smear a bead large enough to cover the imperfections... overlapping the existing gasket area.

If the water pump is removed, then you built up the bead of RTV silicone, install the water pump finger tight to avoid compressing the RTV too much, let is sit for a day then tighten to specs. My water had been installed this way only with some gasket maker -not too sure of the type, it was purple- it held perfectly for over 14 years until I had to replace the water pump, upon dismantling half of the bolts on the coolant passages were finger tight, and it never leaked!

Update:

*After hours trying to salvage it, the timing cover has pin-holes in the cover that stream coolant. So a new timing cover from bulltear is on the list of parts to order.
*Swapped the suspension and axles form donor truck. Fresh 33" Duratracs on a 3" lift make me fearful of the fenders. I refuse to hack these though, so I may source some 31" tires.
*In the process of swapping T-Cases(NP229 to NP208). So no more vacuum drivetrain parts on the '83 :-bd

We pulled out the seats and discarded the stinky shag carpet. Hit any rust with a wire wheel and Ospho. Had one spot i had to patch under the passenger seat. Cleaned everything down and sprayed with rust-inhibiting spray paint. As this is going to be a beach-truck primarily I want it to be easy to clean. The passenger seat bracket was rusted through on the front mounting bolt. So i stole one from the donor J10. :-D Having a parts truck is awesome

Next pulled the NP229(no photo, heavier than the NP208). Degreased and pressure washed the NP208. Tuesday NAPA will have my shaft seals in stock. The tailshaft adapter from the A727 was a pain to find. It is a NAPA Oil Seal 19211. I had been to Oreilly, Autozone, and Advace Auto Parts. Every response was "It isn't in the computer so we don't carry it". The front and rear output shaft without a slip-yoke on NP208(and probably the np229 as well) is a Timken or National #3946. Debating on keeping the flag shifter or swapping in the lever shifter form the NP208.

Moving onto driveshafts. Replaced the U-joints on the longer rear driveshaft to accommodate the new NP208. Doing the same for the front driveshaft and I ran into an issue with the double cardan not going back together correctly. It seizes up anytime i try to center the cardan joint. Giving it one more shot on the spare front driveshaft from the parts truck. If that fails then I will pick up a new double cardan. The front driveshafts are oddly different lengths between these trucks. The one from the 360/727/NP229 J10 is 1 inch longer than the 258/T157/NP208 J10.

Update:

Woke up to a mostly assembled truck on Friday. The timing cover i got from rock-auto looks to be within spec but time will tell. Has about 11 hours of run time on it currently. I upgraded to a Trans-Dapt 9733 transmission pan. This is not a deep pan, its just the cheapest A727 pan I could find that has a drain plug. The girlfriend's dad came over as we were going to he beach with a back-up vehicle(Wrangler). Had to get the distributor in, bleed the brakes, add fresh fluids, load the truck with tools and cooler.

We are impressed at how well it handles the soft powder sand. I have an electrical issue to sort out with the new alternator. Seems the exciter isn't hooked up properly. We kept losing the headlights and when we stopped to check on someone the truck barely had enough juice to crank over. So i zip-tied a LED lantern to the front of the truck.

Next step is to sell the '80 J10 with the 258 parts truck{SOLD!}. No space for it and I really don't want to scrap it.

Sold the green 1980 J10, and slapped some paint on the '83. Two quarts rustoleum gloss white, 1 quart safety yellow, and 1 quart mineral spirits was my color of choice. Look at this now HOA!

Image

Also got a 34-78 yellow top optima battery. Next step is to paint the stripes, and install the hid and led lights on the rollbar. Been a fun weekend.

Got the BJs fan shroud and HEI installed.

Image

As it wasn't street legal, i towed the J10 Binswanger glass and got a new windshield for $140. These guys are awesome.

With the bad weather, we had some time off work. So we painted the stripes and wired the off-road lights. Freebies form the future father in law. HID spots, and LED reverse lights .
Its finally street legal, and plannning a trip to Matagorda next weekend.

Not sure the photo limit on posts. I'm pretty sure the stripes will fade quickly as they were spray painted on. I like having the JEEP on the tailgate pronounced. Now i have to make some rod holders and a flag pole holder for the beach. I have a friend recommending that I mist the underside with oil or old trans fluid to prevent rust. I'm not sure if this is a good idea. It is a rust-free East Texas truck and i'd like to keep it that way though. Looking forward to tooling around the ranch as well as it's only 45 minutes away. But i still need to dial in the alignment.

Not too crazy about the oil spray idea. We used it in Ontario ,Canada to fight the road salt. I would worry sand would get held by the oil and work like sandpaper on your under carriage.

Well, we went to the Texas Gambler 500! Some of the most fun I have had in years. I slapped together a Dorothy which doubles as a 30 gallon reservoir/ballast. I met some awesome people and rode some sweet trails. I plan to go again next year. I need to pull some videos off the dashcam and gopro. I know the inaccurately placed badges are going to annoy people. It's a beach truck, but not Pebble Beach.

It was great having 30 gallons of water to rinse plates.

I found some of those tacky Yosemite Sam mud flaps. I loved them too much as a child. Now i just need some Taz rubber floor mats!
