I started test fitting a factory aux transmission cooler but was surprised how far out it stuck. I think I just wasn't used to it. Then I started to worry that maybe it would look goofy being so visible trough the wide openings of the muscle grill.

Not super visible from a distance with the blacked out core support (it was dusk though)

Just for the heck of it I opened up the screen shots from Twister because I was curious if you could see the cooler in any of the shots and sure enough.

So it needs to be there to be authentic?

Even if it is visible, so was the one in the movie.

Cleaned up and repainted the heater core box.

Image

My heater box had a break in it, probably from a socket on a PO's spark plug replacement, my spare one from the parts car had a bigger break in the same place so I just put a piece of foil HVAC tape on the inside until I can find a good replacement (didn't feel like getting into fiberglass repair right now, this is taking TOO long as it is!)
Image

Also put new foam on the diverter. It could stand being a bit thicker, I'll probably replace it with something better in the future.

After getting the heater core in I got the Y pipe bolted in and got it fired up! Started up fairly easily (thankfully!) I still need to get the drive shaft back in and clean up the wiring (new split loom) but I am so looking forward to the test drive!

I know, heater cores are boring. How about engine videos?

First fire up attempt.
turned the dist a few degrees counter clockwise and it fired right up.

I love heater core pictures and engine videos! I like that sound of the engine as well! Did you see Redone's write up on timing?

Thanks, yeah I did see his great write up. The Honcho still has the original AMC labeled ignition module.

Well, You can hide a GM HEI in there.

Nothing like an AMC with open exhaust! Congratulations Charles!

Thanks Gabe.

Finished up the new split loom, and got the hood back on and aligned.

With that done I put the front wheels back on. I forgot how tall the dang thing is.

Drive shafts and parking brake cable is about all that's left besides grill and brush guard.

Those newer heater core boxes are a pain to clean up and paint. Yours looks better than mine turned out. I have acquired an old metal one that is waiting for some love before replacing. I just don't like the "rough" look of the fiber version when painted.
You have an awesome rig!

Thank you.

It definitely needs a gel coat and some sanding to make it look real nice.

Beautiful :) Wish I could convert my dash to the old style...metal. Is it even possible?

I've thought about doing it on my 87, it would take a complete dash swap.
As a minimum I want to see if I can move the radio closer to the center, it's always seemed a bit too far away from the driver.

Swapping to the old dash would also allow you to run the better, older style fuel level sender.

I came out to the truck the other day to find a big oil puddle on the plywood I had sitting under the front and thought what the hell. Turned out to be dripping out of the terminal of the old oil pressure sender that I had moved off the old engine (kind with the bolt post) I was able to stop the dripping by tightening the nut on the stud.

Looks like a lot of the replacements have a clip terminal similar to the coil and not the threaded stud. I was able to find one with the right stud and get it coming.
