Here's a pic of the Toyota stuff my borg and the # on my t case.
I looked the # up on Novak and its for a d20. I asumed mine was a d21 based on year with automatic? I'll have to get the wheels off the ground and try to engage neutral and low.
When I used 4 wheel drive on the trail the selector was on the floor and I pulled it all the way up to engage it, didn't even think to try a different mode. It's funny too because there is dual range mode selector position sticker on the inside of my glove compartment door. With the selector all the way up it was definitely in four high.

I just spent the last week getting a friend's 300D back on the road after a period of neglect and dis-use. The OM617 is a cool engine, and a good running example should provide almost exactly the same performance as a good running 230, with a bit better RPM tolerance. While I was workimg on his old Merc I kept looking at my dad's 64 Willys Wagon with no engine. If one used a T-19A from a mid 80's Ford truck (close ratio, synchro 1st) and the Novak adapter to the original Dana 18/20 transfer, it would be a straight forward swap. 4.10 gears and a reasonable size tire would work well.
If you want to run an automatic, forget the B-W. While it's not a particularly bad transmission, especially for when it was designed, better options are out there. I would suggest a GM 4L60/700R4. Lower 1st gear, higher top gear, more efficient converters with lock-up, plenty of aftermarket performance parts, yada, yada, etc... and so on.
Yes, the 300 reliability and economy is what I'm most interested in. But it does not look like an cheap swap. I've got other options just need to figure out which Avenue to pursue. It looks like the least expensive so for is to put a roller cam 4 bolt sbc in front of the Toyota stuff I've already got. But I won't be looking at great fuel milage with that setup.

I'm going to try to marry the om617 to my stock as8f, just to keep cost down. But if I have to I'll use my cruiser parts with an adapter. Still need to source sbc flywheel, pressure plate and a clutch disc for the 4 speed.. and driveline modifications aswell hydraulics for throw out. And mounts... all new mounts...
If I keep my as8f/d21 all I will need is motor mount changes for om617

The tires are interco 28x8.50-15 super swampers. They are the closest to original that I could find. This is not a daily so I wasn't shy of the bias ply.
What Rubicon Express springs did you put in your Wagoneer? How close were they to the stock eye to eye lengths?

Measurements are same for mine, the Rubicon express need different joints however. I think I went to 9/16 hardware, I think these were yj rears. The number is in the photo above...
