1987 J10

Post by railamer »

Just joined the club. Mine is a 1987 J10, almost 100% stock, 59,000 miles. The story is it sat in a barn in Northern Florida, under a tarp, for about 20 years. Haven't decided yet whether I should keep it stock and take to shows, or add small lift, a little larger tires, and possibly add some color with a two tone (thinking of painting white on the sides under trim rail, and under the grill on the nose.

The rear bumper seems to have been white originally, but has been painted a silver color. Same for the Jeep letters on the tailgate. I have an 87 jeep truck sales brochure, and the picture from 1987 looks like the bumper would have been white, but the lettering on the tailgate may have been yellow/orange? If anybody has any info on that, I sure would appreciate it.

Welcome, that is one pretty looking truck. If I owned one that looked that good..... I would just pimp it like it is until I HAVE to repair or replace something. Then I would improve it.

Super nice late model J10 !

I really like the 86-88 J Truck dash as it actually works :)
As you probably know not many Late model J's built.

Rear bumper would of been white or chrome.

PO has changed the front bumper and put a late model GW steering wheel.

I have a 1986 J Truck specific salesman data book (have never specific data book on 87 or 88 J Truck) it doesn't show your wheels, although they look fantastic.

Guys

Thanks for your comments and assistance. Red Mistress, any way that you can help me understand what it is that you see that tells you that the front bumper has been swapped out, as well as the steering wheel? Just getting my feet on the ground here, and would like to learn how to spot these things.

Also, rear bumper is definitely painted silver, not chromed, so it must have been white from the factory.

Appreciate any other thoughts or comments you all might have.

Thanks

Al

I have what looks to be the same wheels on mine. I was told they were chevy wheels.

That is a very sharp looking truck. :-bd :-bd I think I would keep it mostly stock. Those wheels appear to be factory AMC Jeep from around 1981. They are 10 hole and only an option for a couple years.

I would chop it up and dovetail the bed. Then sale it a few years later for at scrap prices...lol! J/k!

We all know that the pre '80's rigs were the best.

Nice truck though... ;)

Get an aluminum front bumper and drive it as is. Too nice to modify IMO.

Thanks for the thought on the aluminum bumper. Any suggestions on where to find one?

Thanks

Yup...beautiful J truck...don't mess with it...it has been modified a bit, but in a good way mostly.
The front bumper is definitely from the 70's as it is the 3 piece that was used on both waggies and J trucks. It is 'extendable' as those two Jeeps were different widths. (about 9" wider I think). That bumper was a deluxe version with the optional verticle overriders and nerf strips. The grille surround appears to be off a waggie as the J truck normall had the word "JEEP" stamped in top centre while waggies had the black mustache. By '87-88 they may have just used the mustache...not positive...I'd have to look it up.
And other commenters are correct about the rear bumper...it was either white (later models had black plastic end caps) or chrome. Early models were all steel including the end wrap arounds.
The tailgate letters were normally white, unless it was a Laredo or Honcho trim level, then colours like orange and yellow and silvers were used to accent the truck's colour. A full listing of colours are in my Jeep parts manuals.
BJ's Offroad has replacement tail gate letters (only) in various colours and in correct font.
The wheels I would have to say are likely aftermarket, as Jeep normally used a slotted rim on full size. A number of companies produced alum rims with those holes, and Chev certainly was one of them. I have a similar rim on my J20 made by American Racing but with 2 less holes.
Also on the tailgate, normally they only had the four letters, but Laredo and Honcho models additionally had a border tape in contrasting colours, usually two narrow stripes.

Here (hopefully) is a pic of my '82 J20. I'm using the aluminum 'deluxe' bumper. Previously it had the standard aluminum without the over riders and nerf strips. It was bent so hence the replacement. These tended to bend easier than the chrome steel like yours is fitted with.
I repainted using the '74 paint scheme with the correct break below the front side marker and under the front 'muscle' grille. It has fooled a few folks til I mentioned that it has no roof brow...haha.
The rims are not factory as this truck was built with 16.5" steels. These are American Racing and I think have 2 less holes than yours.

That is a beautiful truck, and thanks for your comments. Love your tires, can you tell me what size they are, and are you running a lift?

Thanks
