Sure, I can imagine being off a little, but half a degree per wheel seems like an awful lot (from what I've worked with, anyway).

Considering the results I've seen from out-O-wack [tm] alignment machines and untrained savages who don't always bother to follow procedure, it seems possible there's as much error in the spec sheet as there is in the vehicle.

We now bring you back to our regularly scheduled diatribe.

My niece's car wouldn't start today in our driveway, so I do all the things you're supposed to do before you settle on the issue and then I swap in a spare battery and it fires right up. My father in law then bought her a new battery that I installed.
All that led me to take that newly charged battery and hook it up to the other battery 24 volt style to the old jack and heinz (sp?) Jahco aircraft starter winch I pulled off the 65 doner. Needless to say, it fired right up and I promptly made a video, then respooled all the cable.

Ahhh, good times, good times.

NOW, how the heck did that guy get it to work on a 12 volt truck!?!?

It can run off 12V most likely, it will just pull twice the current and run at half the speed.

That's the answer a net search yielded, but despite labeling all the wiring, hooking it back up like it was, then replacing and beefing up the gauge, I could not get it to run on a single battery unit. I really don't want to lug around two batteries for this thing, but I just might have to.

Could be the relays require 24V to close. But it should not be a limitation of the motor.

How would I check to see if the relays are 24 volt?

I doubt there is any labeling on them, being as old as they are. Maybe there is a part number stamped in some place. You can also see if with 12V if they close. most bigger relays have an audible click when closing. May want to disconnect the motor when running that test.

They click under 12 volts, but it doesn't seem to do anything for the motor itself.

The winch plate is all welded up & painted.

Now just waiting on the paint to dry.

Paint dried. So while I waited on a guy to come over to buy some parts, I buttoned up the winch.

At the library today with the kids, driving the topless, doorless LJ, and I come out to find a note from the local sheriff saying I had a nice jeep and being doorless looked fun but I needed side view mirrors in order to be within the law.

Whoa. We drove home, I dug through the stash and came up with this el cheapo solution:

Welded on a bolt to run through the upper hinge, spray on bed liner:

Both sides we done up. Functional, adjustable, reusable, and legal. Best of all, cheap.

Nice, thrifty solution! I used to drive my TJ around with no top/doors/mirrors all the time and never got stopped. That's a bummer for sure but at least you just got a warning. How's it look from the front?

Thanks. I can't see spending big bucks on relocation brackets, or custom mirrors to use occasionally in the summer. I do see wranglers all the time without the doors and mirrors, so I'm not sure what the deal is. I do know I was never pulled over in the 66 when I drove it fenderless. I am sure that wasn't legal. I also had a cop on a motorcycle warn me of a broken tail light on the 66 a few summers ago- he yelled it when we were at a stop light and he was behind me. I had the rear slider open. I guess like most professions, there are good and bad people, mostly good I think; it's the few bad apples that spoil the perceptions we have of the rest, though.

Anyway, I snapped a few pics of the mirrors at the local Tar'got:

I like the results enough to be satisfied. My daughter said she wants the Wrangler as her first car. The kids helped me pull the top and doors off today and put the bikini top on. It was a good day.

I use a cheap mirror from autozone that I bolt on using one of the window frame bolts. It actually works quite well, and I can actually see stuff out of it.

That sure beats the big bucks for the after-market parts!

On the Jack & Heinz theme, I finally got around to welding a receiver hitch to the factory Den Hunt bumper on the trailer so I can have a place to store the winch out of the way.

Image

The plan also includes doing the same thing on the front end; butted up to the front bulk head of the bed, but this'll have to do for now as we are working on the rocker panels on the 62. The winch'll stay in the front unless needed elsewhere, but this spot is fine unless I'm towing the trailer.

Stick an air compressor on the front of your trailer to move the weight forward. Plus you can use the air hose to refill soggy tires after a heavy load or blow small stuff out of the trailer when at the dump
I have no idea what I'm doing.

I like the idea of on-board air!
