1990 Grand Wagoneer Lift

Postby DustinLangston » Mon Jul 03, 2017 2:42 pm

Does anyone have a picture of a stock front and rear suspension setup on a 1990 Grand Wagoneer?

I just bought a 1990 Grand Wagoneer for $1700 that is lifted. Appears to be a rear shackle flip and front spring over axle swap. I have a ton of questions. First is i know when doing this lift you can use the stock front springs. What aboit the rear? Should i assyme the rear springs are the original? Next there are these strange brackets on the top of the front and rear axle. Ive had a lot of FSJ's but never one this new. What were those brackets for? Lastly the GW has a fromt sway bar but the end links arent there. With the axle flip where would the sway bar ends even connect to?
Last last question, how many inches of lift is this axle sring flip good for? 4" maybe? Do i need special brackets now for the sway bar end links?

The spring over axle with OEM springs will net you approx; 5" of lift

The sway bar connects to the clamp plate in the stock configuration. When I did mine I used the same plates but swapped sides. This kept the mounting point at roughly the same height. Approximately the center of the spring pack.

The height gain is the distance between the new and old spring mounts on the axle plus the thickness of the springs. Flipping the shackle in the rear isn't enough. I did that with new shackle mounts then mounted the front of the springs below that box they fit inside in the stock setup.

Some pichers here: http://www.ifsja.org/forums/vb/showthread.php?t=164564

It's a Ford axle but the only practical difference is the spring mount by the punkin.

So after further studying and inspection last night it appears everything was done properly. Come to find out the older Wagoneers didn't have a sway bar at all. There are currently no plates for the sway bar to mount to but other than that everything looks right. So I was originally planning on taking it back to stock height, but now I'm toying with the idea of keeping it lifted.

I use imgur.com for pics, I got rid of photobucket when they first started getting nasty with embedded advertising.

If the lift was done right, I'd keep it too. The overwhelming majority of them were kits bought from our member Tad. Well made with super simple instructions. You can look at the components of his kit and compare them to what's on your new Gwag to be sure. Here's a link to his page with links to pics of the components of his kit:

4" front spring drop, 5" rear shackle flip
Chevy style HEI (ECM controlled)
Dolphin "Shark" gauges in a fancy homemade oak bezel
3/4 resto, rotting faster than I've been fixing it.
