Finally got around to pulling the 401 out of the 74 and getting ready to start building it to go into the 86 WT Waggy. As far as I can tell the 401 has never been rebuilt and has about 100k miles on it. Ran great before I parked it and burned very little oil. I have the heads off and on initial inspection I can still see the cross hatching on the cylinder walls which I think is a good sign. I have not looked and the bottom half yet.
Another CFSJA member Erik Larson is helping me with the build, this is my first complete rebuild so his experience along with everyone here will be a tremendous help. I will have lots of questions and will have pics as they come (this probably will be a slow build). My overall goal will be to build a solid, reliable engine that will last a long time. Not looking to get a lot of horsepower so my first thought is that I would like to stick with a stock cam. Second, I plan on going MPFI (yes you heard me right ). Running TBI now in the 86 but having all kinds of issues with timing due to the aftermarket cam. I also plan on changing tranny's to an overdrive tranny, most likely a 700R4 unless anyone has other thoughts on this.

As for the 700r4. If you choose to go with the AA adapter, you might wanna go ahead and check with them to see if they have any in stock. I made an order for one a while back and they ended up having supplier issues and couldn't get one made in a reasonable time.

I think the AA adapter is several hundred $$ cheaper than Novak. I went with AA 'cause I have a relationship with 'em after breaking three Atlas 4spds.
On a side note, I have a 700r4 and a np208 laying in my garage if u are interested....

Hey Scott. Good to see you on this. I am curious what your plan is for the accessories and pulley system. It appears to have a 3 bolt harmonic balancer. Is that right?
I actually plan on running the Bulltear serpentine system with A/C. I know it pricey but I have always hated the accessory system on these rigs, having one belt just seems right.
Even better it looks like Bulltear is revisiting the smog pump kit.

But I gotta ask - rebuilding that thing and a serpentine belt system is gonna put you back some $$$. Throw in the 700R4 swap and a few other things; the price of the build is gonna approach the price for a 5.3L/4l60E swap. You do realize that a 5.3 will make about twice the power and much better MPG right?
It's still good to keep the old iron in there though!
I had been considering those other options but I decided to go with the old iron. The 5.3L swap would be cool but there is a bit more work involved than I want to tackle (motor mounts, exhaust, etc). The only reason I want to swap tranny's is to get the overdrive. Not for MPG, just because I want to be able to drive on the highway, and keep my gearing low for offroading. Plus I have always wanted to build a 401!
I am still up in the air about the MPFI, I would like the reliability and control, its just so darn expensive. I may end sticking with TBI or on of the other aftermarket EFI options. I will decided when I get farther along with the build.

Did more tear down on the engine. I was bummed to find that the rod bearings were stamped so it appears that this motor has already been rebuilt. Look like the crank has been turned as well. I am still hopeful that the cylinders dont need to be bored. Check out the cross hatch!
