I have a 3/8" bolt through the drivers side and plan to do the same to the replacement one on the passenger side. This way it physically cannot come apart.
That's a fine plan and one I know you've had success with in the past, but just to toss out another option, my old race trucks I would wrap 1/4" stainless steel cable around them a couple times. I had a swedge crimper back then but a regular cable clamps would work too. It lets them do their job but also keeps them from coming apart. Might be overkill for you or just a bigger hassle than a bolt, but I was doing a lot of jumping and high speed runs across railroad tyes in that truck...

I welded up the exhaust, routed some fuel lines, mounted the cb, looked it over, etc. It's pretty much ready to go.

I'm taking it down to the tire shop tomorrow to get the two new front tires installed and all 4 tires balanced.

Shot of the tire carrier. Those are the spare D60 axle shafts laying in the bed.

Discovered that the driver side D60 ujoint spit out one of the inner retainers, allowing the cap to back out of the joint. :o I beat it back in with a hammer and tack welded all the caps. Greased 'em real good afterwards. Also threw some booger weld on the passenger side of the front spring frame mount, to match the driver side. Greased all the king pins and TRE's.

Took it over to Discount Tire (where I bought all the kevlars) and they balanced the tires. They discovered that both my spare tires have cracks on the inside of the tread :o It was just a matter of time before those tires blew. They are gonna warranty the tires, but they are on national back order so it may be a looong time before I get 'em. Discount also told me they have changed their road hazzard warranty to no longer cover 'offroading'. I hope to NOT get a flat!

Discount also stripped out a lug stud on the 14bolt  idiots. I don't have time to fix it.

We are planning to leave first thing Sunday morning...

We decided to stay the night at the hard rock in Albuquerque. This pic was taken after the old Honcho drove 500 miles straight

Then Krystal won $500 on a penny slot
