J10 Honcho prep for Las Cruces 2012

Post by AwesomeJ10 »

Well life sure can throw some curve balls and plans can change....

Long story short we've decided to join the FSJ trail run and take the Honcho. For those who aren't familiar with the rig, it's a '78 J10 that we purchased 3 years ago. It's gone through quite the transformation and has been 'wheeled all over the place. It's even served tow rig duty on several occasions.

specs:

AMC 360 with junkyard GM TBI, HEI and summit 8600 cam
NV4500 that rattles quite a bit
Atlas 4spd 1:1, 2.7:1, 3.8:1 and 10:1
Matching 1980 GM 1 ton SRW axles (D60/14bolt w/discs) 5:38's and old school detroit lockers
1410 Ujoints on both ends of the rear driveshaft
1350 CV on the Atlas end of the front shaft with a 1310 ujoint on the D60 end. I run a 1310 up there as a 'weak link'.
Front leaf springs are stock 2" FSJ leaves from BJ's
Rear leaf springs are stock chevy 63" from a 1/2 ton truck
Stock P/S pump, J20 steering gear tapped for PSC hydro assist
42" Kevlars and final edition H2 rims
Custom EXO cage

The J10 hasn't seen much attention since the July 2012 Ouray invasion. We put it into the garage and found a few things that need attention;

Passenger side front tire is going bad and has bubbles in the sidewall
Fuel lines need replaced (most of the fuel lines were actually stock)
Skidplate was broken and needs fixed. It rubbed a little hole into the exhaust, creating a small leak.
Passenger side motor mount is broken
TBI needs tuned
Fuel pump (P/N E2000) is way to loud and needs replaced with a quieter one.
Interior needs cleaned.

Now onto the pics!

Here is how it looked in July 2011 on the Petersen's Ultimate Adventure (it was one of only a handful of rigs to NOT break down on the entire trip)

Broken skid plate (we threw this together JUST before the UA and didn't do a good job)

Skid plate before repairing. I'm gonna put some new tube and plate on there.

Probably can't tell in this pic, but this tire is starting to get some bubbles in the sidewall

I think it was out of an XJ.

We made good progress today. Re-ran some electrical wiring and installed all new fuel lines.

Booger welded the skid plate back together with a couple of new tubes. :o

Still need to cut out some plate and weld it on there.

Took the skid back off and made a couple of plates to tie it all together. My neighbor is a heckuva lot better welder than I am and he finished it up for me. :D

I've painted it black, but no pics of it yet.

I made this exhaust flange out of 3/8" plate a couple of years ago. It's never blew a gasket or leaked :-D

I could be mistaken, but see the darker rubber, then the wide u-shaped line with lighter (dustier) rubber under it? I'm pretty sure that's a ripped-in-half rubber block motor mount but I could be wrong. I just know that mine don't look like that. Mine look like a nothing sammich on rubber bread.

I'm not being a smart alec, That could be a different manufacturers rubber block or something. Hard to tell since it's kinda cut off at the top of the pic.

Blake, keep up the good work! That thing is awesome! \m/

3/4 resto, rotting faster than I've been fixing it.

That's a korean motor mount for an AMC V8, about 2 years old.

I have a 3/8" bolt through the drivers side and plan to do the same to the replacement one on the passenger side. This way it physically cannot come apart.
