J2000 Gladiator resto-mod *Pic Heavy*

Post by 68J2000 »

Hey everyone,

I've been on the other forum for a while but never really started myself a build thread. I figured this would be as good a time as any to begin one for myself. Keep in mind this is still an ongoing process so I got a bit to go till it's road worthy.

I'll start off with some pictures from when I first got the truck. When I first bought it I had the intention of doing a diesel swap, I had later started piecing that all together, donor truck with 6bt cummins but had to change course when I ended up swapping the 6bt into my 2nd gen dodge ram (the V10 that it had was going through big $$ everyday so that had to go ASAP).

A little while later I had figured on building up a fun truck to cruise around with and have a good bit of reliability and try to keep most of the appearances original, that brings me to my current plans for the truck which are underway. I'm putting in and AMC 304 that I had picked up for almost no money, that engine is currently getting fully rebuilt by my engine guy with a little extra performance. Behind that it's getting an AX-15 5 speed transmission so cruising on the highway won't be a constant screaming drive. Behind that a Dana 300 transfer case is getting mated to the transmission and I'll be running the original Dana 44's front and rear with 4.27 gears. With the 33" tall tires and the 5 speed it should be alright on highway speeds and still plenty peppy around town.

Original 232CuIn straight six mated to a "3 on the Tree" and Dana 20
Image

The tailgate is beat-up but all there, I'll most likely be rebuilding it and those cab corners were basically all bondo hiding a past fender bender or the PO had just hit some stuff, either way needs fixing.
Image

All in all that was how the truck was before I had picked it up in NJ and got it back to my house in NY, I'll be making follow up posts to show the progress I had made and how the truck sits as it progresses.

Continuing on;

I began stripping down the truck and cleaning it to see what exactly I was up against. The floors turned out to have a little bit of rust so I ordered floor pans for both sides. The passengers side rocker panel was pushed in pretty well as if someone had driven over something too tall and bottomed out on that side, so I ordered a replacement rocker panel, cut out the old one and put in a new one.

Drilled out the spot welds, man does that take forever to do.

Here's some of the shots I have while stripping it down while I was assessing that damage that needed to be addressed..

Passenger side front floor pan, you can see the remnants from where the PO had glued or silicone'd some "patches" over the cancer holes..
Image

Here is a shot further back on the passenger side floor showing the same kind of crafstmanship :P
Image

No surprise here but the drivers side was no different than the passengers side
Image

As you can see in this shot I began removing that rear bracing steel to fix the cancer that was below it..
Image

Image

A lotta spot welds in these rigs... :banghead:

Side note, cool bit that the truck has less than 40K miles on it and the fella I had bought the truck off of had the intention of restoring the rig but had other projects going on. He had actually bought the truck from the original owner and I had found a good amount of "log" information that the original owner kept on the truck.

Image

The original engine ran a little on the hot side (blown head gasket) and the linkage in the column was sloppy but it did run and drive until I had stripped it down for my proposed plans
Image

Out with the old and tired;
Image

In the middle of things I had been experimenting with different lighting options, I had fitted 4" round LED taillights into the truck but didn't care for the black rubber surround on the light. Those lights will be back I have another idea for them...
Image
Image

As you could kind of see in the last shot the bench seat has seen better days and will be replaced with 2 bucket seats (I love the bench seat but isn't practical with a 5 speed shifter in the middle) I will try to be reusing the original seat belts because I LOVE the Jeep badge that's stamped into it.

Fast forward a good amount of time in the build (it's been an on and off project for too many years, I just want to drive it already :( )

I had done some re-working of the engine mounts and had gotten the AMC 304 fitted up in the engine bay with the radiator. FYI the engine had come from a '78 CJ-5 and the radiator from the CJ has the same fitment into the early trucks with no modification..
Image

I've been trying to save some money on the project and still get some things done on the truck while it's still too cold to work outside and while I wait to get the engine back (hopefully only another week and I get the engine back :D )

I decided to clean up the old worn valve covers that came with the engine and repaint them instead of replacing them, keeping with the saving money theme here. Before and after a cleaning on the outside. I wish I took a picture of the inside of these things, they were just GRIME soaked them 3 times with de-greaser and hot water and good scrubbings to get them clean inside again..
Image

Putting on some primer..
Image

More primer
Image

Then some Black Wrinkle finish paint to make them classy..
Image

The finished product after a full cure with the painted covers

Over the years I've owned this truck I've been picking up various small parts for in anticipation that they weren't going to get any easier to find as time went on, so I guess you can say...as many of you most likely are already, I became a hoarder of Jeep parts LOL

I've bought additional pie plates (I think I have about 3 or 4 pairs now), radio delete plate, washer fluid bag, speaker cover with trim and badge, extra Rhino grill set up, I have about 10 hub caps with the Jeep logo's and 3 or 4 hub caps with the Lock-out hub cut outs and many more parts I'm forgetting...
Image

Image

Image

I also did come across these lights for replacement back-up lights as my originals left a lot to be desired in appearances, they were pretty cheap and I were listed for the early CJ series Jeeps.
Image

I've also been playing around with repainting the trim badges, I'm getting closer with the colors but still need something a lot closer to chrome for the base, the gold I think needs to be a darker gold and I think my orange paint has too much red in it but it's getting there. This was just a test I did on an extra badge that I had, my original badge is on the right and the horn button on the left has the best preserved colors that I've been able to find.

No problem and if I remember correctly since the the radiator I had from the CJ-5 had the 304 V8 with it, it also had more rows of cooling cores in it (3 rows?? Can't fully remember). I haven't looked at my original radiator and the CJ one side by side in some time but I believe my original only had 1 row of cooling cores. Always glad to pass some helpful information along :-bd

That is a beauty! That's also going to make a nice little drive line for that truck. Makes it nice and streetable in today's driving environment. Planning any brake upgrades?

Thanks guys, I can't wait to get some more work done on the truck and of course update the build thread some more. As far as breaks go, I was just going to be rebuilding the stock brakes the truck has but eventually I would like to upgrade them to something reliable for potentially everyday use and also be able to retain my factory wheels so I can use my hubcaps.. If anyone has some viable, budget minded options while keeping my factory wheels I'd be all ears since it's a while away from being a finished product I can afford to make some changes here and there. I know there are some disc brake conversions out there for the early axles but they cost an arm and a leg, not easy on my current situation..

The fight continues on.. I began to finally get my floors done so I wouldn't have to worry about stuff falling out of the truck when I finally get to drive the thing :-bd

I got the front passenger floor pan plug welded along the supports under the floor and butt welded along the existing flooring. Note that I still need to make a patch panel for the front right area where the floor meets the firewall.
Image

Image

I began to mark out the rear floor repair area and proceeded to cut the section out. I started to run out of light but will get the repair section cut and welded in tomorrow so long as everything goes to plan. Here's what I'm looking at for the rear pan area to be filled in..
Image

That's about it for today's update hopefully tomorrow will prove to be productive and I can begin the drivers side floor soon enough. The upside is that I don't believe the drivers side is as bad as the passenger side was...I think..

First, welcome to the network... Image

You build is coming along nicely. will be watching to see it come together.

Quick question, your hub caps, are they all for 15" rims? I have a full set for 15's but am running 16" rim's and cant find them in 16.

Thanks Blake,

Thank you Jaber, it's nice to finally start making some progress on the truck seeing as how I've owned it for roughly 6 or so years now. It'll be real nice if I was at the running driving stages but I'll get there...eventually

The hub caps I have are the moon dish's, I'll put up some pictures of all the ones I have soon enough. I have 2 of the original 15" wheels in decent shape but still need at least 2 more original wheels to make the truck complete. If I can't find them I might have to break down and buy the replacement wheels BJ's started offering just not crazy about shelling out all that cash right now lol.

I think the 16" wheels ran different style hub caps and they weren't like the moon dishes, I could be wrong but I think they ran a cap like this one:
Image

One of the members on ifsja (not sure of their handle) had a whole write up on all the different hub caps they had and what wheel size/years/rigs they were run on. I wish I could remember who it was but it was a VERY impressive collection of beautiful condition hubcaps, made me jealous for sure

Weather was pretty decent today, not as warm as yesterday (45* today) but managed to make some more progress today. Got the rear section of flooring cut and welded in. Just need to do some cleaning and rust proofing before I start putting the rear cab bracing back in so I don't lose my work in the long run

Image

If tomorrow's not too bad I hope to get the drivers side cleaned up and start getting the pans cut to size and welded in on that side as well...getting there one step at a time. Then with a little bit of luck I'll be getting my freshly rebuilt engine back later in the week

At least that's the plan, who knows what happens

Well, it's been a slow crawl in terms of forward progress but I've begun the drivers side floor pan repair. Been getting the engine progressing towards stages of assembly.

The heads had to go into the hot tank 4 times! 4! They were full of grime and pretty bad, after a good rinse and a trip to the bead blaster they came out looking pretty good...

Here's a side by side comparison, the one on the left about to get blasted and the one on the right after a good blasting..

Image

And here they are after they both got the blasting treatment..

Hoping to get going on more steel work to get the body closer to paint prep but I've taken on a side job fixing a friend of a friends trailer and Deere bucket. So after I get that out of the way it'll be back to the Jeep, hopefully with a little extra cash for more parts!! :-bd

Well, I know it's been quite some time since I've updated my build thread, but unfortunately I haven't had the time to work on the old Jeep, I can say that I've been buying up parts/spare parts for the truck all the time. In other Jeep related news, my father and I took a trip down to North Carolina last fall to pick him up an '83 Wagoneer Limited. The owner I bought the truck from did quite a bit of work on the Wagoneer, and it seems like it's always been well kept. The only rust areas I could find were the bottom side of the drivers door, a small section in the rear passenger side wheel well, and it appears that the passenger side lower rear quarter was replaced at one point, but not done correctly. I lost all the pictures on my phone that I had of his truck from the trip down there and back up, but I've managed to dig some up on my computer, more pictures will come to follow after I remember to snap some more..

Image

Image

Image

Once we got the truck home we were able to give it a good going over, see what's missing and what needs to be addressed. My father intends for this to be his daily driver, so it needs to be reliable. Fortunately, the truck already had a Jasper reman engine put in about 400 miles ago, the transmission had been rebuilt less than a year ago, and the transfer case had recently been replaced as well. We gave the truck a good cleaning, pulled about 5lbs of leaves and pine needles out of each side of the fresh air cowl (thank fully there wasn't any rust in there, so it must have spent most of its time inside a garage. It's currently getting a Razor grill and round headlights fitted on to it.. oh yeah, I almost forgot, that engine got a little more get up and go power now that we threw a Edelbrock 4bbl performer intake and an Edelbrock 4bbl 600CFM carb on it, and a nice free flowing magnaflow exhaust to give it a nice rumble too  ...that's a pretty good bit for now, I'll have to update again after I get some more pictures of it..
