j20brett's build thread

Post by j20brett »

Well, since ifsja seems destined to fail completely at some point in the not so distant future, i will use this thread to archive my original build thread over there, and continue with new info in this thread. Howdy, since i am a resident "newb" lol.

This is where it all started a few years back. All nice and stock. had been used to pull a horse trailer in a previous life.
Image

Built a bumper, added a razor grill, 2.5" lift springs in front, wheels, tires...
Image

In preparation for my first ever wheeling trip, i hacked off th fender flares. tires would have rubbed bad if i hadnt removed them.
Image

Wheeled it a few times, trashed the lower bedsides pretty bad. Time to bob the rear and build a flatbed.

and got to wheel it again! Installed an aussie locker in the front before this trip also.

Built some rock sliders and a tcase skid plate in there somewhere also, but they are anything fancy. Welded the rear end also and beefed up the bumper for the winch.

Wheeled it for a few years like it was, and it served me very, very well. But, i was following guys on at least 35's who had much better belly clearance than i did. I would beat the snot out of my rig to follow them, but she almost always went everywhere the big dogs went. The time had come for some changes. Thsi phase was temporary fromt the beginning. i always knew i wanted tons and 40-ish inch tires. I love the look and capability. So i picked up a 79 ford dana 60 front and a 14-bolt rear and started building. front is 5.13 gears, spool, ten factory chromo shafts, ballistic fab highsteer arms and the new yukon locking hubs.

35-spl vs 30-spl 60 outers :D

Rear 14 bolt with detroit and 5.13's, some disc brake conversion and i shaved here down a bit. (upside down in pics)

Got a steal on some allied beadlocks, 17" x 9.5"

Got another great deal on some used 42 x 15 x 17 tsl's about 95% tread. Need to buy a groover and make them better.

And thats about it as far as the build goes for now. About to start building a house and thats a small drain on finances. As soon as the house is done, ill pull the axles and sell them and old tires/wheels to fund the remainder of the build. Lacking hydro assist parts, steering linkage parts, misc leaf spring mounts, shocks, drive shafts, brake lines, possibly have to get a new master cylinder also. Will be doing a shackle reversal in the front, so tired of worrying about the springs bending. Until next time...

Dang it Brett, everytime your build gets bumped on the other site it makes me want to buy a J-truck. Now I see it will get bumped a lot here to!!! All this peer pressure. I just can't stand it anymore!!! Must have J-truck.

BTW...I love your truck.

Well, christmas was good this year! I have either received or ordered all the parts to get the axles swapped under the rig. Going with a shackle reversal in the front, but using these slider boxes instead. http://www.liquidironindustries.com/pro ... t=0&page=1
Pretty neat idea and makes shackle reversal a breeze. In the back ill be fabbing my own orbit eye rear hanger of sorts. Taking the orbit eye principle from alcan springs and applying it to the rear spring hanger using ballistic fab shankless rod end and what essentially amounts to a smaller diameter spring perch. Anyways, more pics in the coming months. Still building a house and have plenty of things to get done on it first.

PS - My original j20 axles and tires/wheels will be for sale very soon. shoot me a pm if interested.

Well, not a whole lot to update on this thread, but i am still around. Worked another weekend and got her driveable, loaded on to trailer and moved to the new house! Had to air down to 2psi to fit in the garage, but she made it. Have a few clearance issue to take care of after the axle got pushed forward 2 inches. Steering is going to be the uptravel limiter on the passenger side of the frame. think i will build a new pitman arm to double shear the heim and gain some clearance from the drag link. Also got the hydro assist ram and mounts, so need to get those mounted up. Still need a new steering gear box as the bearings are toast on mine. need to flex her and measure for driveshafts, buy new front springs as these are beyond trashedand get front shocks and finish the mounts along with bumpstops. Will probably pull the trans and get it resealed before any of this goes back in also. New rear main seal wouldnt hurt either. And build a new transmission crossmemeber as mine has been smashed on too many rocks and hits the driveshaft.
