Red must have been a popular color, my '76 S is identical to your '74 with the red top except I have a 360. The plan is a 5.3/4L60/NP241C but I am still waffling on the white top, I think it looks classy. I don't even plan to put it on the road until I install a TBI, even if it's only for a year; I really hate carburetors.

Looks good! I dig the truck mirrors. I also have the tiny square ones. Pretty much on there for entertainment purposes only. Kind of like the gas gauge. Did you get the diesling issue sorted out?

Decided not be lazy today and did some things for the Jeep.

I did the ammeter bypass everyone urges, replaced some lights and fixed the heater controls. ( Only Defrost could be pushed in and stay, off and heat could be pushed in but they would pop back out. )

Also put a temporary "floor" for the passenger side.

Went to the car wash and vacuumed up all the loose rust and sand.

Image

Sprayed a rubberized coating..

Image

Then screwed a piece of sheet metal in....

Image

Not pretty by any means but it keeps things from falling out and some water/dirt out.

A full restoration/rebuild would be wonderful but I don't see that happening anytime soon :(

Today's Adventure. Sorry no pictures and long winded....

Well ever since I bought my Jeep, the rear window did not work. Also it was down about 2 inches. Since the window would not go down, I could not open the back gate.

I decided to remove the rear window motor and then go from there. Previous owner must have broken a bolt off and part of the motor assembly but lucky for me I was able to remove the remaining 3.

I brought the motor inside and disassembled it. DIRTY! Cleaned it all up. :-bd

Since the motor was out I then went about trying to lower the glass. One of my clips for the window glass linkage is missing and everything was frozen up with rust, dried up grease and many many pine needles. After removing as much of the needles and mud as I could I eventually got the glass to go all the way down.

Yay!

Still could not open the gate. I can get the inside handle to move a tiny tiny bit. but that is it everything else is frozen.

Then I thought maybe the window motor needs to be in to release a safety switch or something.

Got the motor in and success! It lowered and then did nothing :banghead:

Tail gate would not open and now the window wont go up :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

I removed the one linkage clip and was able to lift the window. Long story later (too late) The window is all the way up, The one linkage clip is back on ( Huge pain in the rump). I left the wiring off the motor and removed the switch on the dash.

Any pointers on how to get the gate open? All linkage has been sprayed with penetrating oil.

Is there a better way then clips to hold the linkage to the window? I think I have an idea but wonder if anyone has done something else.

Oh The old man who previously owned this Jeep decided to put rags around each piece of the tire jack and then into the right side wheel well. Of course everything there was wet and everything is very rusty :banghead:

Well between rain cycles, I got my rear tailgate opened! :D All linkage is moving nicely now. Still have to put the return spring on the passenger side latch but since my window does not go up with electric assistance I won't be opening the gate until I figure out why. I am just happy it opens.
Image

Oh and if you look at the rear seat you can see I tore it when I climbed into the back :banghead:

The only thing that comes to mind is that the little metal pin switch thingy that is a part of the dash switch to roll the window up and down might be broken/missing. Part of it clicks over some kind of retaining piece that isn't supposed to let you open the tailgate unless the window is down. Of course they are plastic and break. I didn't have one in mine and until I fix the motor in my tailgate I'm not too worried about it. There is also a possibility that the handle broke free from one of the latch puller arms at some point. The fact that you were able to get it open eventually makes me think that the retaining pin(s) are broken/missing. Or the lock pins are really nasty. Or all of the above!

Also, is that the normal location for the spare? I thought they were usually under the floorboard unless someone put on a swingout carrier and extra fuel tank?

Metal pin switch thingy?

My latches were all gummed up from not being used. My Jeep was parked under a pine tree (previous owners)

As far as I know that is the stock location for my spare, but maybe someone else will know for sure? I do have dual tanks with a single fill hose.

Metal pin switch thingy = a metal/plastic piece that has a latch on it so that the tailgate can't be opened unless the window is down.
Metal pin switch thingy = a microswitch that detects if the tailgate is open so you can't also open the tailgate glass with the tailgate down.

So whatever the technical term for that is...it might be broken/missing. ;)

Okay,The one on the tailgate. For some reason I thought you were referring to something under the dash...

Yeah mine is metal. The contact points are probably corroded.

Beautiful day in the neighborhood here today so I put the headlight harness I bought from Serehill. Freaked me out because after I put it on my front parking lights did not work. Ended up being the sockets for the parking lights. Move the wire a little bit and they go out.... I will have to switch those out too.

And to clarify there is nothing wrong with the harness I bought from Serehill...

Ok. This is notes for myself so I can get a parts list going and what not....

This is my little thread of all the upgrades that I want to do at once ( following what others have done.) I am doing this to be focused on it all, and get some pointers if needed.

The vehicle. 1974 Cherokee S 401 auto.

I will be replacing the stock wiring. I already bought a EZ wiring harness from BJ's and L.E.D. taillights.

Upgrade 1: Done Volt meter. Ammeter is already disconnected. My AutoZone no longer carries this brand, well according to the guy that was helping me.

Upgrade 3: HEI Distributor. I have points right now. Done

Upgrade 4: Repair power steering reservoir leak. Done

Upgrade 5: Master cylinder Done

Replace

Upgrade 6: Vacuum & fuel lines Replaced all vacuum lines. Some fuel lines.

Took my gauge cluster out to do the volt meter conversion and saw how the previous owner "fixed" a cut wire and installed the cassette stereo

Image

The connector on the glove box light just fell off... and I hate when they only use electrical tape to splice wires together.

Side note glove box is falling apart, I will need to replace or repair.

With the glove box out I saw that the passenger side defroster vent hose was disconnected. Found a few things inside.

Image

Just for fun I decided to see if anything was in the drivers side....

Image

KEYS! Once I clean them up I will see if they are for the tailgate. Wish I would have found these before I replaced the door locks...oh well.

Edit. These are the keys for the glove box. Probably fell done there when this thing was brand new as the keys look like they have never been used

Worked on the Cherokee today. :D

Upgraded battery cables. They were 4 gauge and I had NAPA make me up 1 gauge.

Image

The forth one is for the alternator.

Speaking of which, I disconnected all wires to clean the connections and to check them out.

Here is what I found. These 3 wires all went to the alternator.

Notice the wires were worn through. Took time to fix it all up. :-bd

Electrical is fun! At least on mine, the round-ish keys fit the glove box only and the square one works in the doors, ignition, and tail gate. So you might get lucky and have glove box keys still.
