Got the trans today.. We're getting close!

Didn't get much else accomplished today with the Jeep.. except using it to haul firewood. Gotta keep the wife happy. I'd put another layer and some wool socks on, but she wants a fire going..

Firewood is good. And so is a happy wife. It'll keep her from putting your transmission on Craigslist.

Last night I had my family over for dinner. First time at the new house. My step dad brought me his old engine stand. It's old enough that it only has one pattern, small block chevy.. you know, compared to the ones you buy there with the adjustable mounts. Was able to get it mounted, which took way longer than I thought it should, just because I couldn't seem to get the engine level, and the mount doesn't come loose of the stand.

Had to take the passenger side exhaust manifold off because it hits the mount plate. No big deal, I already bought those gaskets.

Image

So tonight, I come home from work and the garage door opener has apparently stripped a gear. Hit Youtube, then Amazon, order the parts to fix.. Move to tinkering with the engine. Drivers side manifold, rear most bolt.. Put the wrench on it, spins freely.. Think, that's odd.. then it falls out of the hole.

Image

Sigh. So I guess I need some left handed drill bits and some easy outs.. and a bit of luck.

That's a common problem. At least you can get to it easy with it on a stand. Try doing it with the engine in the truck still. ;)

That 5.3 is dirty!

Check for the knock sensors, some of them were mounted under the intake manifold and are much easier to change with the engine out. ;)

It's an 04. I believe it's got about 130k. I have the Vin for the truck it came out of on the invoice.

The trans is from a Trailblazer SS. 06, I believe. They swapped the tail shaft and housing when they rebuilt it.

As for the knock sensors, I wasn't planning to swap them unless someone says they are common failure points. Trying not to drop $100 on anything not required right now.

I replaced mine, wish I would have taken pictures but when I'm busy and focused taking pictures is the last thing on my mind.

The one knock sensor was clean looking the second was real nasty it was covered in a nasty white paste looked almost like corrosion. I would replace if you have the money to do so just because you won't want to replace when that motor is in the jeep. And if you do replace make sure you buy OEM, don't waste your money on crap sensors, just my opinion. Rockauto.com is where I got most of my parts since they offer acdelco.

If your knock sensors look like this, you might want to change them. Hopefully they won't be any worse.

I just came to the unfortunate realization that the fuel pump I have from my donor truck will not fit in the 97 blazer fuel tank. Sad face.

Can you swap the pump into the Blazer housing? A lot of the pumps were the same, they just used different molds to hole them in place. ;)

If I had that housing. I bought a new tank off eBay. Looks like I'm going to buy a fuel pump too!

I did get that exhaust manifold bolt out. It took a hammer drill to do.. but the threads in the head look unscathed.

As for the tank....

That fuel pump & sender assembly does not look like the one for the S10 Blazer tank. They are around $100-$150 new, IIRC, including the fuel pump.

It's not. It's out the donor truck the engine came from. It was included for free with the engine. The 2 door pump and sender assembly is running 309 at AZ/Advance/OReilly here locally.. eBay has some questionable ones for under $100.

That's for the 1985-91-ish, i assume. My tank is for 97-02ish. Not sure if it'll fit, and then if it's going to be the right choice for me because I have a returnless setup. I need the regulator in the tank, or to run the corvette filter setup..

Re-reading through Capt Smith's thread.. I'd be using the pump that goes with this tank, and then the corvette filter/reg combo.

I looked at that 91 pump again, but I don't see PSI spec on Oreilly or Spectra's site.. not sure if the TBI pumps have enough pressure to do what I need.
