I hear ya on family and household stuff. I'm finally wrapping up my kitchen install that I did last summer (putting on the finishing touches, molding and touch up paint). There is always something that needs attention around the house.

It looks like more updates will have to wait until the middle or end of May. I have vacation coming up in the beginning of May, headed to Savannah.

Wow, it has been quite some time since I last worked on the J10 but I'll be back at it on Sunday.

I'm planning on doing a lot of the wiring and had a couple questions for the other 5.3L swap guys:

1. How did you wire the TCC Brake Switch wire?
2. How did you wire the VSS?

I'm running a 700r4 with my 5.3L

For the TCC switch, I built this simple relay circuit found at LT1swap.com. Since I have drive by cable I wanted to use Delphi cruise control and modified his circuit just a little and it all works great. Very clean and simple.

If adding Delphi cruise control you just need to add a couple more wires to the circuit to make the cruise module work correctly.

No help on your VSS issue. My NP241 had electronic speedo and I am using a Dakota Digital dash, simple connections for me.

Jeff, thanks for the info I will look a little closer at the lt1swap.com site I must have over looked this.

For the VSS, I kept my QT and I'm planning on using the original speedo so it sounds like I don't need to hook up the VSS until I swap out my gauges for new ones???

One other question regarding the TCC Brake Switch. Is the vehicle drivable (in and out of the shop) if the TCC Brake Switch is not wired or will I cause harm to the trans?

You will need one of those speedo cable adaptors as others have used on here (check jeffsj's build thread), you will need something similiar to what he used. Your engine harness will connect to the adaptor and then the VSS wire from the ECU will connect to your new gauge.

I really wasn't sure what I was going to do with the TCC switch and was so happy to have found Brendans diagram. I bought a dual circuit brake switch that I thought I would use but there was no way on my 86 to make it fit where the original single plug switch is above the column. The relay circuit was an easy to build simple circuit that I am glad I found and I could use my original single circuit brake switch.

I think it would be ok to back it in and out of the shop a few times, wouldn't go much further and it will probably throw a code but I can't see how it would harm the transmission.

Tcc won't even try to turn on until it hits 3rd gear. You'll be fine.

Matt, I used a VSS from Jags that Run that attaches in between the transfer case and the end of the speedometer cable.

243, interesting I have a VSS from dakota digital but I'm not sure how it hooks up. I'll have to take a look at it closely. Thanks for info.

1978 J10 Project moved from IFSJA...5.3L swap with QT!!!

Post by msh227 »

Well it has been 13 months since I last drove the J10. Today for the first time with 5.3L the J10 moved under its own power from the barn to its parking spot outside. I still have plenty of wiring clean up to do but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel! A very good feeling.

I do have a question though......

Image

Today I topped off fluids and I had antifreeze leaking everywhere because I forgot to hook up the coolant line that sits on top of block and connects to the water jacket ports.

My question is where do the two ports in the picture (below throttle body) get hooked up to? I can't remember how they were plumbed when I bought the motor.

Inline with the port that comes off the head. Or you don't have to hook it up.

thanks lobie, I only saw one port coming off the head and it was on the driver's side. What is the purpose of these ports? And is there a downside if I don't hook them up and just cap the port coming off the head?

They heat the TB up. I've never hooked them up.
I suppose they can be good in cold climates???

The ports on the head are steam ports. They help prevent steam pockets on the heads. The ports should be the highest point on the heads.
Some engines have then on the rear as well and some are just blocked in the rear. If the engine is at an angle then only the fronts are needed, and I've seen people say they block them all.

I would run it direct to the radiator so that you still get the benefit of steam relief from the head if you DON'T live in a really cold climate (rather than plug it at the head). If your winter temps get down in the minus teens or below, I would run it through the throttle body as per OEM specs. It works like carb heat on a reciprocating airplane engine. Cold intake air undergoes a pressure change at the venturi on the throttle body and if there is significant humidity present, it can ice up causing the throttle to stick open. The carburetor/throttle body heat prevents this.

Finally got another day to work on truck yesterday. I'm in the middle of selling our house and buying a new place so this summer has been very busy and the J10 has been moved to low priority.

My plan for next time is to secure fuse block and PCM finish hooking up systems (temporarily) and then send to exhaust shop.

More to follow on this slow boat to china……

I have been MIA on the site lately and that is due to a busy past 6 months or so. New job, new house, new baby, etc. etc. it has been so busy the J10 has taken a back seat for now.

With that said once this arctic chill breaks the truck is going to the exhaust guy and then I have a guy lined up to finish my wiring since I don't feel like dealing with it anymore.

More details are coming but it will probably be another month or so until work begins again.

It is driving me nuts it is so close to being done but still feels so far away!!!

I know this is old, so if you have already taken care of the steam line, disregard...

The steam line is one of the things that makes the LS series of engines able to make so much power. They allow for high compression without pinging by venting any steam made around the combustion dome.
