Are you installing console from a Super?

We’re using a sliced and diced XJ console for the XJ shifter.

Cool! I always like seeing console solutions in J trucks as I'm considering replacing the bench in mine, in order to make way for buckets.

62 passed his driving test, so he’s legit to drive the Thriftside.

He’s double checking everything today:

He calculated the mpg today 14.65 mpg. Pretty much the same as if it were an XJ. He’s stoked.

Congrats 62, you deserve it!!!

Way to go on the rig and the license test, 62! Amazing rig. Very unique, great looking, and now with very respectable mileage to boot.

How does that AW4 handle the full size rig so far? I did a 4.0 swap in my 67 but kept my T18. By far the best engine swap i couldve done for it (originally a 232). What were the biggest issues youve come across during the conversion? Sorry, im new to the site so i havent followed this build

It’s all good. My son really likes it- no issues so far. The only real “issues” were sorting through the wiring to make sure we had all the necessary wiring for the transmission controller, fuel pump and needed ecu-like devices.

He’s put a whopping 180 miles on it so far, no hiccups (knock on wood!).

He loves driving it on a road called Trent. It slices through Spokane and turns into a country highway pretty quickly, leaving the city behind, two lanes, 50 mph, not much traffic if you avoid rush hour. Every time he come home from school/sports, the gym, or elsewhere, he’ll have a story about someone giving him a thumbs up. Pretty cool.

Thats awesome. It was a pain to wire mine. The donor was auto, the truck is stick, etc. Crank sensor has been the biggest issue. Ended up relocating it to the crank pulley with a Hesco kit. Next time i do a 4.0 swap i think i'll retain the Aw4.

There have been roughly 4 4.0 swaps that I’ve seen in the FSJs, but not too many build pages. Two of the 4.0 swaps were converted to carb.

I am glad we bought the whole XJ, though. In the end, it was cheaper that way. We did think about a manual, as in buying an XJ with a manual, but overall, the AW4 version works just fine for our needs- I personally prefer a manual transmission, but no matter what swap is done, there will be a slew of problems to solve! Haha

My biggest issue using a xj 4.0 was getting a central fan and belt routing setup figured out. If i recall i used a TJ water pump and a ZJ heavy duty fan clutch with the original XJ fan blade. Used the XJ ps pump, hoses and steering box which surprisingly had the exact bolt pattern as the original manual gear box. The only real common problem ive had has been crank sensors. I bet im on like number 8 or 9 now haha theres always spares in the glovebox. Not sure why but it goes through them like crazy, even if im using mopar brand sensors
