1962 j-200 Thriftside Father & Son 4.0 AW4 D300 Project

Post by 66stepside »

Good question! I guess there are a few reasons. Mostly I wanted to retain as much of the 4.0 as possible. Then there's the ideas of how effective is a cold air intake for saving here, more _______ here. Would I need to retune the ECU for any added benefit? Here's a link I found when doing a bit of research before slice n dicin': http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f9/faq-c ... 437?page=1

No, I don't want to start a raging debate, but all in all, just keep as much of the stock stuff as possible. I've never been shy about trying to fabricate something, so I will plumb the 4.0 air cleaner assembly through the front of the housing for an increase air flow.

Besides , with those tiny tires, there's plenty of room for fabrication.

Sounds good, and the whole project is coming along nicely! I was just curious more as a space safer, maybe time saver versus performance oriented. I had k&n intake system on my old wrangler that probably set me back $200 for negligible gains I'm sure. But it was also probably the first upgrade I did, was a simple blot on, and something I couldn't easily screw up ;)

I've ran k & n, spectre and just about everything on the various jeeps I've owned, both old and new, and never managed to see much of a difference. They sure look nice and it is an easy upgrade. I still have k & n set ups on the 66 and 04 jeeps though. I did it, I'll leave them on. I guess, though, maybe now that I think about it, my son can swap in a cold air kit later and whine about the PO who cut up the fender well like a moron!

We did a few minutes to get the air cleaner in:

Image

Image

While my daughter was at gymnastics and my son was mowing the neighbor's yard for jeep money, I hit up Pull N Save and score a few goodies for the intake. A Grand Cherokee's intake hose and an older Cherokee's intake hose extension!

Image

They'll need to soak and get cleaned up a bit before we can do the installation.

I kept an intake off a JK that is now no longer needed, so to craigslist it'll go.

Image

I'll just call all that phase 2.whatever.

Want a pair of '77 inner fenderwells? They are in the back of my Comanche headed for scrap soon.

Normally I'd be all over that, but I don't think I'll be using all four of the ones I have. I think I'll have two left over.

Aside from the fender well mod on the driver's side, I was able to get the firewall harness plug set up:

So, a few more hours dialing in the fender well and it'll get painted, then reinstalled.

EDIT:

A few hours is turning into quite a few! Ahhh, the joys of body work.

Meanwhile I traded the SBC CJ radiator from the dead FrankenJeepster project for an 88 YJ aluminum radiator. It's gotta get disassembled and cleaned:

62thriftside will clean it again, then reassemble for mock up, then mod the brackets to work, mod the fan shroud to accommodate an electric fan as we'll be removing the stock mechanical fan.

Passenger's side inner fender well is bolted up, as is the radiator support, radiator, the engine harness/PCM and electric fan.

Thanks!

The AW4 tranny controller is plumbed through the firewall. I still need to mount it in the cab under the dash, though.

Here are the window regulator tabs I use. They're better than the factory ones that always seem to break.

We started on the passenger's side fender well mod, it's bolted up, the new hole is cut for the XJ's fuse box and the bottom plate is tack welded in place. I'll tack up the side, pull the inner fender and weld it up nice and tight. Then the body work begins to make it look decent enough.

So, I haven't read this whole thread yet (just found it tonight). I will, though.

Anyway, what happened to the original front axle? I want to convert my truck to 2wd and can't seem to find one around here.

Quite a few forum members wanted it, but shipping is cost prohibitive. So I still have it and the rear 44 with limited slip.

One member down south wanted to do a 2wd truck/Wagoneer with it. I recommended he find an econoline van, or dodge sportsman style van as those had straight axles up front with leaf springs, too. I know this because I nearly bought a sportsman van to convert to 4wd and build it as an FC van tribute.

If you're interested in the axles, I'd probably sell them though part of me would want to keep them with the truck. So, I've still got them.

Hmm, ok. I appreciate your desire to keep original parts together, even if they aren't "together" and I appreciate the honest advice even more. Would also have disc brakes without modification.

Thanks!

Yeah, the idea behind keeping it all together is that if I ever have to sell it, all the factory 2wd parts can go with it if someone wants to restore it back to it's rarer version. Of course any of that is highly unlikely! Lol.

and I appreciate the honest advice even more. Would also have disc brakes without modification.

You're welcome. The honest advice saves a lot of time and money!! The econoline/sportsmans vans are reasonably common around here, though not as common as jeeps.

Hey guys, this is the passenger inner fender well. Me and my dad sanded it down, coating it with sand able primer on a regular basis. We then painted it with spray on bed liner and we are waiting it to dry. The next step is to install it!!

Looking good 62!

I am proud that you're keeping at it. The work needed to build and rebuild this truck is probably more than you expected- despite my warnings.

Image

Meanwhile the dash is in before I head out to see the Foo Fighters at the Gorge, and 62 mows four lawns today to pay for a school trip to DC.

Due to a recent cold snap, we had delayed the dash install because we needed consistent temps above 70 degrees so the seam sealer in-between the dash and cab could cure properly.

Thanks Atla!

This weekend, we cut up a jeep Cherokee center console and mocked it up to fit the stock transmission hump cover, then fit the Cherokee center console piece mocked up. We even cut the hole for the shifter cable.

Then we took the front clip of the jeep out of the back of the shop and are now ready to disassemble it, but sadly couldn't finish because it's Sunday- which means a school night and a work night... Ugh!

We did manage to get the hood off and he sanded on it.

Image

But not before I noticed a faded three digit number written in grease pencil/chalk/soapstone.

And a GM sticker:

We're only working on the engine side as the plan is to keep the vintage patina if possible- which will require a "reenactment" of sorts on the different cab.
