1975 J-20 build

Post by 75-j20 »

I bought my first jeep and project vehicle, its a 1975 J-20, amc 360, t-18 , dana 20, dana 44 front and dana 60 rear. i drove 4 hours to Wyoming to get it. when i got there the guy couldn't get it to start and he had cut all of the wiring so he could hot wire it (wiring is a mess) I paid $550 was this a good price or not? its got some rust, rocker panels are pretty much gone, bed has some rot in the sides, and the cab floor as some, (somebody did a crappy job trying to fix the cab floors).

sanding thru the paint to find all the layers. The top coat was done with a brush, you can see all the brush strokes.

pulled the rear drum to see why its not working and the wheel cylinder is blown out and the brake line was missing. I put a bolt in the fitting to stop the leaking of brake fluid for now. axle seals are blown and making a mess of the drums

up on the lift to cut out coil springs that were welded between the frame and axle to help support the weight of a snow plow Im guessing since there are snowplow mounts and the front bumper is in the bed

I didn't get a picture of the coils in there but you can see them on the floor after we cut them out with a oxy fuel torch

the front driver side spring mount was broken in half and was only attached to the frame on one side, i cleaned the rust off and rewelded it on. here's a picture mid way thru cleaning it up.

the prevous owner made a mess of the aftermarket oil pressure gauge, it was leaking onto the floor board in the cab (which did help keep it from rusting there) once i hooked up the mess it stopped leaking and the gauge read good oil pressure (my only two working gauges are the aftermarket temp and oil pressure gauges)

Quick update
I found some used tires on basic steel rims in the local classifieds to replace the word out and cracking tires it came with.

I replaced the non-working alternator with an 80 amp chevy one. once I had the new alternator in I decided to rip out the mess of wiring in the truck. So far I have rewired the main power, alternator, fuel pump, and ignition so it runs.

I was having an issue with my steering so I pulled my steering box and tore it apart to discover that balls had broken and eaten into the worm gear so I ordered a new one.
