Wires go to the power seats and rear door electrics.

Ah - makes sense. My Chief does not possess those fancy high end model luxuries. Shoulder workouts are free for all occupants who wish to get some fresh air :)

Started to tackle the cowl today! First two photos show that for a reason unbeknownst to all, the seatbelts are like melted to the car.

Anyway, after pulling back the drivers side carpet and seeing it wasn't bad at all, I pulled back the passengers side and it's still not THAT bad, but it's clearly a problem. So I ripped out the carpet pad and went to town with a wire wheel.
Image

As far as I got before my drill battery died.
Image

Buuutttt.... this is the cowl cover and I cannot get it off because I cannot access the top screws. I REALLY REALLY hope it's clogged and that's the cause of the leak, and the fact that the side panel here was completely drenched and rotted, I hope I'm right BUT i can't confirm until I get that effing cover off.
Image

Unrelated, two of these wires going into the cowl go... absolutely nowhere. What did they used to be?
Image

Anyway, threw a towel down there for tonight because (shockingly) it'll rain all day tomorrow. But really- any advice on getting that cover off without totally dismantling the dash?

I think you mean the fresh air vent cover. The cowl cover is the one just in front of the windshield, right behind the hood. Looks like you go that one removed fine.

Others may chime in, but you may have to drop down some of the factory a/c unit as well as maybe remove the blower motor and fan to get access to the top of that cover.

Floors looking better, just get as much flake etc off as you can before applying the rust inhibitor. Also, might be wise at this point to pull those outer scuff plates off as well and take care of the rust that may be there. I bet if you tried to unbolt your seat brackets you would find at least one of the bolts rusted solid to the floor. Does not matter so much if you don't plan to change the seats, but in my case I had to drill those out and through bolt one mounting location.

Yep. Drop the A/C unit to get to the vents. Those things in your cowl are windshield washer squirters.

Ugh. I'll get on that ASAP when I get another dry few hours. For now, because it was raining, I stayed indoors and did an ugly job (maybe to be redone better later on) of meshing the cowl cover. Got a break in the weather so I installed the cover and finished sanding and then coating the floor pan. Aaaand within 30 minutes it was raining again. HOPEFULLY not too much water gets in there while the stuff is drying. We'll see!

Aaaaaaand last of the day. Promise.
Out with the old, in with the new.

Old glove box, ratty cardboard. Turns out, however, that of COURSE it's not a 'pop it out, pop it in' deal. The new glovebox is bigger than the hole, si me thinky I have to take off the whole dash to get it in there?? Might just build my own...
Image

And then there's these wires. Of course they make me nervous.

The glove box has to be gently massaged onto place from what I've read.

The wiring looks left over from a previous radio install.

Nice job on the screening. I have still not screened my cowl vents. But, my Waggy sleeps under a carport away from trees.

Yep, that is speaker wire for sure. Just make sure they remain accessible before you button up the glovebox install so you can install a radio later if you want.

You can get the Laguna version for pretty cheap and since it has an AUX port, you can plug in your phone and listen to tunes etc. Fits the factory location with no cutting an looks period correct.

Awesome!! Should I wait for that radio to arrive before working on the glove box? Or you think I'm good to install the glove box now (or at least try to)

I have no experience there.
my dash looks like this:

Have another dash to swap in when it goes to the body shop.
I personally would wait to install radio.

I have two questions.

First where did you find the new shifter nob?

second what is the point of the mesh under the cowl? is it a leaf and debris guard? and.... surprisingly not surprisingly after reading fully through this thread I saw where you suspected the leak was coming from a clogged cowl so i'd imagine this would be the reason for the mesh.

Debris guard to keep junk from accumulating in the cowl boxes behind kick panels. Keeps the drains open to let water out.

Dodger pretty much covered it. Mesh is to keep big debris from getting into the areas where I now suspect I have leaks. Shifter knob was from Team Grand Wagoneer https://www.teamgrandwagoneer.com/gear- ... 1974-1991/

hmm... makes me want to open mine up and see how bad it is. Looks like 1/4" hardware cloth was used but what was the white cloth used with it?

The big roll of mesh is this stuff I got at lowes, like a very fine chicken wire. THe white stuff is butcher paper I put down to help protect the carpet. What I ACTUALLY used were the adhesive mesh bondo patches that you slap on a rust hole before applying bondo. I bought many, ended up having extra so I used them for this. I had to use a little chicken wire so it's a little patchy, but oh well. I'm sure there are MUCH better materials to use- and I might redo is someday.

I also bought a few panels of this 'foiled on one side foam insulation board' stuff initially, and then decided to use the more pliable rollable insulation. Is this any good to use under the hood? I worry that it's foam, so it'll catch fire or melt or some nonsense.
