90 wagoneer 5.3 lc9 swap

Post by Cheapthrills »

So my 90 gw caught fire few days ago from electrical short, so I've decided to start getting it ready for a 5.3 swap.

It's gonna be a slow thread but I'll post what I've done as it happens. As of right now iv pulled the fire damaged engin harness.

Tomorrow I will be pulling the engine hoist home getting the jeep turned backwards in the garage and maybe pull the front wrap, to start cleaning everything up.

What is it, 75? Bwahahaha! We get used to temps. 90 feels cool to me at night. Stupid question, what is a LC9? Heard of LS9.

90 today... I'm a winter guy. Lc9 is an aluminum 5.3 with VVT and dreaded AFM (DOD, displacement on demand).

It's found in the 07 to current Chevy trucks and suvs

Oh man. 90 is chilly. Displacement on demand? What sensor does that use? Fly by wire gas pedal? VVT and DOD? Are you insane? LOL :geek:

So I'm deleting the DOD (displacement on demand) also known as AFM (active fuel management), this system shuts down 4 cylinders while cruising. This uses the lifters to shut down said cylinders via oilbypass cylinoid, the lifters are what fails and take out cam. This is why I'm deleting it.

VVT (variable valve timing) I'm keeping it gives you great low end torque , without sacrificing high-end horsepower.

So I pulled the intake on the 360... it wasn't doing so hot... found severe pitting in the cam lobes that you can see through the holes in the valley. This sucks because I was gonna swap it into another engine for my 87 GW.

So as stated before the cam was well on its way south. However, the rest of the engine was in beautiful shape.

Pistons are still tight almost no wear on the cylinder walls (could still see hone marks). So lower end bearings a cam hone the cylinders new rings and freshen up the heads and into the daily she goes.
Thought I'd share this info because it sure impressed me. For a GW 360 with 185k on the clock.

There will be more about this engine in the stock tech "87 GW engine refresh"
