Project 78 J10

Post by mbatvburg »

New member here with a 78 J10. Not new to jeeps (this one is #6) but this is my first FSJ.
I didn't plan building a jeep truck. I had an 83 CJ7 that was getting a 304 and t18 swapped in. The motor was complete minus the power steering pump brackets and alternator brackets. Hopped on craigslist one Saturday and found a 78 j10 listed, no price. Called the guy up for the hell of it and told me it was a one owner truck from VA. It ran with gas poured down the carb, manual trans, flatbed and the clutch might be slipping.
Long story short, said he wanted $400. I wanted it just for the brackets and part the rest.
Not sure what happened but I showed up and this ugly f@wker grew on me. It was still on the trailer and the guy said he would do $375 if I brought it home and brought the trailer back.

Dumped it off, returned the trailer and gave it a quick once over. 360 / T-18 D 20 / 44's front and rear. 9.5 foot flatbed on a swb truck ! Truck ran great after pulling the clogged inline filter. Slipping clutch actually is a grenaded rear diff. Rear pinion likes to wiggle a lot and skip teeth!

Managed to cut most of the fugly flatbed off when I found 2 flat tires on my truck one morning. With no legal (j10) or heated (46 cj2à) transportation, I called into work. Strapped the 2 flats to the back of the j10 and drove to the service station. Not bad of a drive considering it had no bed, rear bumper, plates, taillghts and in 4 high. Was so impressed with its performance, that I tore out the rear axle the same day! I've got a GM Dana 60/ 14 Bolt w/ 4.56's ready to go in. Plan is to run dually front so I can run hummer wheels and tires.
BTW, I sold the CJ7 just so I could swap the drive train into this ugly truck!

This is how it sits now. I'm looking for square tube for spring hangers. I've got a srw and van 14 bolt but would like to find a pickup dually 14 so I dont have to run spacers. The 60 should be easy compared to making a 14 bolt fit.
I also have an M101 3/4 ton trailer that I was going g to use for a bed but, I will focus on one project at a time.

The D60 is a bolt in up front along with the typical steering mod's to make that work.
You probably already noticed that our Jtruck frames are really wide out back since you are talking about different 14-bolts.
The SWR is a nice match if you inboard hangers under the frame, plenty of clearance for drums or discs if you go that route.
It does give a bit more lift than the front D60 swap does but that can get worked out in the leaf spring dept.
3.5" x .25 wall box tube works fine for hangers.

I did a bunch of reading on IFSJA and the pirate4x4 14 bolt bible. The srw 14 has the gears and gov lock I want but not width. The van 14 has the width but only 3.73 gears. I will use the srw but will inboard the springs and move perches. Also looking to use 3" dually spacers on the rear to match the front better.
I know 3" spacers are bad juju but my hummer tires and wheels weigh in at 150lbs each already. What's 3" and a couple lbs going to hurt a 14 bolt?
I was surprised, my local steel barn didn't have 3.5" tube. I will have to try one more place before I have to order some or fab them up some other way. 2x4 tube was $13 a foot! I was shocke. Haven't bought steel in a while. I bought enough to make a rear bumper. Trying to engineer bolt on brackets that match the factory frame holes.

My SWR 14-bolt is 67" wms and my front D60 is 69.5"
I think you loose a little turning radius if the rear gets wider? (not sure).
Yup, I order a fair amount of steel, prices are off the charts right now unless you are locked into a contract. I hate to see what next year will look like.

Got any pics of your rear hangers? Always curious to see how others build. Should be fun considering the frame is wider in spots. I plan to weld the hangers to angle so its solid to the frame.

Mine look just like the ones on my website.
Link in sig: TT's Fabworks
My setup is a bit different as I have a post mount rear suspension and moved the axle back 6" using 63" GM springs.
Being that yours is a truck, Blake's rig is pretty much what you are building, I'm sure he will be along to help you with pic's.

Don't run those spacers. You need to put those springs under the frame for clearance purposes.

I'm running a '78 J10 with a D60/14 bolt. Here are lot of recent pics, but not much of the rear; http://blakeoffroad.com/coppermine/thum ... hp?album=1

Looks good Blake. I've got a dually front 60 and keeping it just so I can run stock H1's. I'd rather not run spacers. A 77" ish dually front won't match well with the 67" rear. I might have clearance issues with the frame and springs with the h1s as is. That's why I'm keeping an eye out for the dually pickup version.
