Meet my 1989 GW, "Murphy"

I'm not big on naming my rigs, but this one is deserving of it's name. She's going to be great when I'm done, but she's one stubborn rig. Every time I find something, I catch something else that needs attention.

Anyway, she's got 64,000 original miles from the sun soaked state of Arizona. So, no rust. BUT, the sun really did a number on everything else.

Got her on the lift, fixing the mechanical stuff. While she's up there, rust inspection time.

Got her stripped down and ready for paint.

Recovering the overhead console. I wanted to be a little different, so I didn't use the normal headliner material. It turned out to be almost a perfect match to the seats.

Wood grain application is the most troublesome part. If you're not experienced at it, I'd seriously consider having a decal guy install them for you. You can get the kit from BJ's or TGW, but be very careful. I ended up wasting 5 panels before finally admitting defeat and getting a decal guy to install them for me. I've got to order another kit though, which ain't cheap. Lesson learned. Some things are better left to the pros.

Yeah, this looks good in the picture, but not good enough for me. This was the last one I attempted. Fewer bubbles this time, but several small wrinkles toward the bottom.

Taking the insides out. Still no rust.

Got the front insulated. Waiting to do the back until my new roof grommets come in.

Recovered headboards.

Added insulation to the backside of the headboards. Haven't installed them yet, but it may make them too heavy. We'll see.

Refurbished my badly scratched up interior trim. The color was a perfect match to the existing.

And, remember that half a kit of woodgrain I wasted trying to install it myself?????? I found the perfect use for one of the extra panels. The strip of painted metal between the window trim and carpet panels in the cargo area. I never liked how they just left those "unfinished".

WOW nicely done! Yeah we in AZ love our rust free bodies but the sun can take its toll on everything else. I really like your choice of paint.
