Tonight didn't go off according to plan. Wyatt had an emergency and had to leave so I needed to finish the tires he was doing. The pistons are soaking in Gasoline overnight to clean off the carbon and tomorrow I WILL assemble the short block!

Short block almost assembled! Took FOREVER to get the pistons clean so progress was slow. But they are clean now and will go in tomorrow.

Crank is in, cam is in, timing set on. Heads are ready to be reassembled.

Excuses excuses I know, but my phone camera is actually broken. Hopefully by Tuesday I'll be taking pictures.

Alright ya whiners here are some photos.

Current state of the engine: Image

Last night we scrubbed the pistons, tonight I installed the rings and cleaned the head bolt holes in the block: ImageImageImage

And it may not interest anyone else but I'm pretty proud of how the hne job turned out. I did it by lantern light in the other shop without power: Image

And I'm pretty happy that I'm keeping a clean work space for once! Image Clean by my standards anyway...

don't know when or how it happened but I came in tonight and found a cracked piston skirt. bent badly enough the piston was sitting on the head surface and wouldn't go into the bore. flicked it with my finger and the skirt broke off entirely.

I think I'm done

Did it happen to be the one in the picher with the nick at the edge? That was kinda suspect to me.

No, that little cut is to show which end of the piston faces the front of the motor.

Ok I have sourced a set of eight badger pistons that will hopefully mic out to the same diameter as the old badger pistons. If they do I can get the old ones pressed off and go about filling material away from the new pistons to match the weight of the old ones. In that case I'm only $250 away from finishing the engine now. But if the pistons are not within spec for bore size I'll be completely hosed. At that point I'll need .060 pistons, rings, cost to press those onto the rods, bore the block, and then a full balance job. So like $1500 bucks. That six weeks pay and I won't have six more weeks of work!

On that same front, my student loan was denied. So I may not be leaving this year at all! Gah!

Oh man so sorry to hear about all the frustrations and issues. Sorry the 401 has so far caused more pain than joy. :(

What can I do to help? Was the jacked piston one that came with the 401?

This is in my other 401, yours was flawless! This is one I bought out of Carbondale. Sadly I had to sell the one you sold me to keep this disaster afloat. :( It went to a good home though, currently it's in storage with Traci Clark of JP magazine. It will be going into a built CJ7 shooting for 600-700 HP.
