I will check that out thanks,
I don't know the rpms just yet as I still don't have a tach hooked up.
I'm conservatively judging by noise factor,
Cruising speeds seem better now, at the cost of some low end performance however.
Since changing the tires I have stalled out trying to take off in second gear and I need to run the gears longer before upshifts as well a bit of hesatation/lag pulling away when cruising.
But I'll get it all sorted out...

Hoping to get a 3.73 posi scout rear axle today, bye bye tapered shafts.

Does anyone know what model gas tank I can use for rear mounted conversion?

Won't a suburban gas tank fit?

The scout 2 rear I'm getting should be 58.5" I think/hope, maybee???
I like the rear I've got with the exception of not having functional brakes, and the thought of using a puller to get the hubs off is something I'd rather avoid.
The scout has the same lug pattern, that's mostly why I chose it, and the one I'm getting is geared the same and has a locker in it. So I hope it'll work.
It is centered though so I'll need to get a rear mounted tank, and a spare carrier.

Ah, if its from a scout II you should be ok on width. But yeah, fuel tank will interfere.

Got one side done.
You have the brake shoes in backwards. Unlike all other drum brakes set ups (that I've seen anyway), the small (normally primary) shoe goes on the rear on non self adjusting jeep brakes with cam adjusters. Don't know why, but it's even in the TSM. Non self adjusting brakes with star wheel adjusters use the primary shoe on the front like most set ups.

Thanks kaiser, good eye. I put em on the way they came off. I even asked my local parts guy cause I wasn't sure, he said that "all" drum brakes are like that. I will share this newfound knowledge with him as well.

The scout 2 rearend is awesome, I'm pretty excited. I need to rip it apart and clean it well, there is some rusty muck in there .doesn't look like it affected the pinion bearing so I'll pull carrier and axles, check the carrier bearings clean everything really well do the brakes, weld on perches and slap er in there.

$300 delivered, same gear ratio and it's got a clutch type locker.

I could have bought the rare 73 wagoneer rearend last year but didn't want to spend $850
That one was open carrier.

Been looking at fuel tanks to do axle swap. I'm thinking of using a scrambler tank to retain my sending unit and it looks like fill and vent hoses are a straight shot to filler. Haven't really run the numbers yet but found a supplier that lists dimensions. Thought I'd share if anyone is interested.

Got the rear end all cleaned out, bearings look good but it's gonna need new shims and seals too. I ordered an open carrier , planning on putting an ausie locker in to replace the trac-lok.

Ya new experience for sure.
Im planning on keeping 3.73, not going to run any larger than 31's for a while.
so for now at least but that will all likely change if I go with a dana 44 soa in front, then run 63" chevy springs/shackle flip rear.
Is clearance the only reason to mount outboard, or can I go under ?

Super rare 73 rear axle? What makes it rare. I have one sitting attached to a frame in my driveway. I'd take way less than $850 for it hah!

One year only/rare: sameular/different.

Apparently 73 was in between, 5 lug/6 lug, tapered/flanged. Didn't make it worth spending that much on. I would have rather converted to 6 lug than spend as much.

That's crazy though. Where did you see one for that much? Is it a D44? I have one, it's 5 lug and off set. If you were closer I would sell it to you cheap. I know Fastenal isn't doing 3PL shipments to California right now and I assume that goes for a lot of other crate shipments from the east coast.

I was going to remove the axle and store the frame at my Dad's place for now. Maybe I'll throw it on eBay and see what happens!

Anyway the one with flanged shafts is not too much different from the scout 2 dana 44.
Maybe width wise that much I don't know, in any case the scout 2 is the same or real close in width to my 64 tapered shaft d44 at 1/3 the cost that's why I got a scout rear.
My price comparison however was based on one estimate from a wrecker in Sacramento.

Ah ok from a wrecking yard, that makes sense I guess. Probably the only one they have and they think it's super rare. It probably is, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's desirable or in demand haha. Anyway, I'll have to find out if it's tapered or not. Thanks for the info. Build is looking great BTW!
