Susan gets a new engine!

Post by Renodemona »

Greetings FSJers! Susan is getting a new engine (hopefully a sweet 401 from a Pick n Pull Waggy). Just going to show my progress, trials, mistakes, wounds, and "jokes." Started to take stuff apart today. Removed the TBI, grill, radiator, fan shroud, battery, winch, bumper lights. Also disconnected all the vaccum to the 4x4 selector unit and the TC, the Brake booster, and the electrics for the ECM. Just need to disconnect the exhaust and unbolt from transmission to get the engine free now. But I got hungry and the house painters needed that corner of the driveway so I decided that was enough for one morning.

Also found out that 2 out of 3 fluids I tasted today were gross and the third was ok but makes me gag. ;) Coolant and ATF would make terrible flavors for ice cream and motor oil would make people throw up. Someone should tell Ben n Jerry in case they get any crazy ideas...
Thanks for reading, should have a little bit more in the coming days!

Nice progress!
Are you going to bring the 360 along so you don't have to pay the core charge?

Also, you haven't truly lived JeepStyle® till you get a mouthful of moldy coolant then add another teaspoon of battery corrosion powder.
OM NOM NOM NOM NOM!

BTW: Pulling the hood off and setting it aside makes the job much easier. Just be sure to scribe around the hinges where they bolt to the hood so you can get it back on without needing to adjust. Paint around the hinges works too!

Oh, are you still coming down to the Sonora meet n greet?

I won't be able to get the 360 out by next week (no lift here until I grab it from my dad's lol). I was definitely going to pull the hood to make life easier. Good tip on the hinges. I will be there saturday! And as a bonus, now I'll have a/c if I need it.

Not sure on B&J, but Jelly Belly does some crazy flavors. ATF and Motor Oil sound right up there ally. Then they could make a Gear Lube one for the real masochist!

Jelly Belly has some sick flavors!
Vomit
Roadkill
Garlic Breath
Moth Balls
Cheap Perfume

Some not so bad such as:
Pepperoni Pizza
Ceasar Salad

Their factory is about 45 miles from here and whenever I get the chance I stop by to sample. They even have a JB store here in town where you can buy their mistakes at a great price.
Did I mention I have a Jelly Belly addiction?

HUGE Thanks to Jim (Tatsadasayago) in helping getting Susan's new engine out of the donor Waggy at Pick n Pull. Super clean inside (except the evidence of straight water in the cooling system) and looks to have been a rebuilt recently. Still had gas in the lines and it drove in to the yard so shouldn't be too much to get it cleaned up and back in Susan. If that Waggy could talk...ah well, some must be sacrificed so others may live!

*Solemn Face* "So that Others May Live!"

You gotta share a photo of the rockers and head! Show off the CLEEN!

BTW: His Dad came up with a Seatbelt Engine Lift® that was brilliant!
I didn't bring a lifting chain and was about to go home to get one...
He unbolted the belt from a nearby donor rig and made up a lifting sling with the ends (The steel Seatbelt end and mounting end) as lifting eyes. We bolted them down on the center exhaust ports and lifted the engine out in no time.

High Five for ingenuity--Old Soldiers for the WIN!

Was surprisingly fun to work with you guys today.

Sorry it has been a little bit since an update. Some cold weather, house projects, and extra work hours kept me from getting the 401 set up. But here we are! NEW high-flow water pump and all the accessories transferred over from the 360. Everything went back together relatively smoothly. The 401 was from an a/c delete and my 360 has a/c so there were a couple places where mine had a stud and the 401 used a bolt. Couple extra nuts and and a new bolt later and we got everything mounted up good and proper. The york a/c unit went back on so that I can do an OBA conversion down the line. For now it just means I didn't have to get new belts as the old ones were in good shape still. Closing in on pulling the 360 now. Just have to unbolt the exhaust and the mount bolts. Looking around at the exhaust I might need to have a new system fabbed up, the pipes are looking super rusty. Here's a couple pics! (Love how the new shiny looks against the less than new parts.

Sly Park is a rec area near Pollock Pines, CA. It's off Highway 50 in the lower Sierra Mountain range.
For the last 42 years my friends and family have been meeting there on New Years Day to shoot the bull, bust a few snow drifts and have a good time. Family friendly get-together.
