Edelbrock 1406 Idles Rough On Cold Start

Post by Snuffleupagus »

I adjusted my timing a bit and got it tuned in. I did this with the engine warmed up and I removed the vacuum advance like the book says. Took it for a drive and the motor sounds smooth. I actually had to turn the heater off to here the engine. That's a big big improvement. Tweaking my timing got rid of all the shaking I was feeling. I took it out on the big road and was doing 65 with 1/8 less gas pedal.
Now….I let the engine cool for several hours then I started the engine again and it idles rough until it warms up. Lots of chugging. I had to keep the engine running with the gas pedal for about 20-30 seconds. Finally it wanted to idle on it’s own (Roughly Though).
I let the engine warm up to good running temperature and it smoothed out and is running smooth and quiet again. What adjustments can I make to improve a rough idle on cold start-up? It’s an edelbrock 1406 w/ electric choke.
I'm usually wrong!!! (I'm not proud of it).

1: Is the electric choke working? IE: When its cold, is the choke closed? This can be adjusted by turning the black housing on the choke after loosening the screws around it.

2: There is a high idle setting on the carb, is yours set and working?

The choke "was" working I'll have to verify that first.......
Edelbrock says the fast idle screw should be in between the two notches....It is.

When you start it cold, do you give the gas a single pump, then turn the key, or do you push it more than once? If you push it more than once, you will be turning the high idle off. So make sure when you start it, only hit the throttle once. And as I recall, high idle should be around 1200rpm. Then once you hit the throttle, it should then drop down to the normal rpm.

Correct answer Stuka........You answered my question right after I figured it out. :ymblushing:
She's truly running like a champ now. I was hold the gas pedal half way until she started, then I'd let off. Thanks a bunch.
