Finally got the replacement distributor yesterday and it's in and the Jeep is running!
Trying to set the timing and from what I've found online 9*-11*BTDC is what I want.
Anybody got a good clean photo of the timing marks on the AMC 258? Can't really tell what's up with mine or make them out, gonna try some brake cleaner and see if that helps.
BTW Who's the genius at AMC who put the timing marks on the opposite side of the motor from the distributor? I don't have a tach on my timing gun so I might end up needing 3 sets of hands to do this: one to watch the tach in the cab, one to hold the timing gun and watch the timing marks and another to turn the distributor...yay

Glad its running well for you now!
Thanks! Mine has the small notch too.
Just got back from the first test drive and the Jeep feels like it grew a serious pair of cajones. I think I got the timing set to where it needs to be but the timing light had me confused. At idle with the vacuum advance blocked off it was showing about 35*BTDC of time.
