Wideest tire on a WT Chief?

Post by woodsboy00 »

I just recently picked up a set of MT Baja Belted 35x17.50x15 with rims and 60% and was wondering how well these would run with my 6" lift on a WT Chief. Also, the wheels are 5x5.5 bolt pattern and I was wondering how I could get my axles to handle that. I thought about rec entering the wheels (kinda sketchy), I thought about wheel adaptors to go 6 to 5 but those are spendy and make it even wider... anyone have any ideas? Most of my stuff will be straight lines on the river. Trailered rig. Thanks guys

Well, I'd look for new tires and wheels. They are wide and will limit your steering and then I am assuming the wheels may be aluminum, so no reentering...even if so...kind of a waste unless you really want those wheels. Adapters will increase the width....so add up all of the negatives and you better of starting with what you want to begin with...even if they were a smoking deal. Good floatation for sand and snow though :D

I have 35" x 12.5" x 15" on my 77 wt chief with a 3"(?) lift, I only get a little rub and it is because of a previously mangled fender. I would think with twice the lift you shouldn't have a problem. I would see if you could swap the wheels for some with the right bolt pattern, throw an ad on craigslist, or I've found facebook has a lot of groups for such a thing. Yours would fit a dodge, ford or some jeeps.

Here are a couple of pics of mine just for reference.

Trailered rig.
You must have a wide trailer if those tires and your WT will fit comfortably.
Not saying you don't or trying to be snarky but a 17.5 wide tire is really wide.
I'd probably run them if I could but I sure wouldn't spend $$ to do it.

There is no way to make an adapter to go from a 6 on 5.5" to a 5 on 5.5". You need to get new wheels.
1977 Cherokee S, Ford 5.0, 5 speed, BW 1356, 33 x 10.50 BFG's. No longer my DD.
2007 Mercury Milan, 2.3L, 5-speed, now my DD. 29 mpg average.

Thanks for the help guys. I know the width is SUPER wide. I was hoping to air down for the river and increase my tire area on the sand. I didn't think there was an adapter for that, and even if it was availible it would be spendy, and make my width even wider. I was trying to avoid buying some wheels... Owell. Just a broke college kid trying to be cheap. Working my butt off 60-80 hours a week in the summer time trying to make some toy money. I already have a set of 32x12.50x15 on it stock height so I will keep those for now. And Tad, its a custom made trailer. Widest you can legally go, and tires are underneath it, so it has no fender wells, making it a flat bed car hauler. Very handy. Even then! There would probably be some tire hanging over the edge.

A steering box brace will pretty much be required in order to run a tire that wide. Not to mention fender cutting (Unless you have a lot of lift).

So I should just ditch them and get new tires then? Maybe someone on CL/FB will want them...

I think I would try to flip them and shop for a 35x12.5 set on 15x8 wheels.
