AMC to Allison ?

Post by AMGeneral »

The AMC bell housing is a round one like Medium and Heavy duty trucks. I think there is 4 different round bell sizes ? ! Anyone know if one of them is close to the AMC pattern ? !

They're not close. The medium duty and industrial bell housings are SEA bell housings, numbered 00 through 6 with 00 being the biggest.

So the best route would be an AMC to GMC adapter and use the GM 2500-3500 allison auto ? !

Um, yes. The issue is I am not aware of anybody who makes a stand alone controller for the Allison. The Allisons are computer controlled.

Hopefully in the future we will see a computer controller for the Allison 1000 transmission. Advance Adapters make an adapter to adapt the Allison 1000 transmission to an Atlas II 3.8 or 4.3 transfer case. I have the GM adapter plate to adapt the AMC block to a GM transmission. I have a 700R4 already, I just would like to step up to a 6 speed Allison. My thought is companies make a stand alone kick down kit for the 700R4, then it wont be too long and someone will make a stand alone kit for the Allison 1000. I think the Allison is too new for the medium truck class to adapt to it just yet. Its my dream drive train. AMC401/Allison 1000 6speed/Atlas II 3.8/4.56s/35" rubbers. I'm 85% of the way there. I don't see stand alone computers coming out for modern auto transmissions. It would really be pretty difficult. The newer transmissions have sensors for throttle, brake, speed, engine rpm, and engine "load". Trying to make one of them worth without the engine they were developed for would be difficult. And, why go through all the trouble and money to make the newer trans work with an old engine? If you have the cash to buy a transmission that cost that much, chances are you could buy the engine too.

I didn't think those allisons were all that good of a transmission any way. Don't know for fact just things I have heard.

I know you can get controllers for the 4L60E and 4L80E's.

The whole mess is confusing to me, I don't know much about anything built after October of 1987 and most of that info is AMC/AM General/Jeep information. I didn't really follow the none -independent brands.

I'm also not much of an automatic transmission person.
