8 lug front axles

Post by fulsizjeep »

I know where there is a cheap GM 10 bolt 8 lug front axle from an 80s truck. I have a J20 front axle that has knuckles and outer removed and needs some parts to build up the spindles, hubs and brakes. I have heard or read or both that the outer assemblies on the 10 bolt and D44 are the same same. Can anyone confirm this?

I would just use the whole 10B assembly. No real strength difference. Unless you want the D44 because you already have lots of parts for them.

It would be a SOA/ SUA difference. I dont think he is SOA, and dont think he wants to go there yet, but could be wrong... ;)

If he is going full width axles (Well WT width in front, full width in back), he doesn't have much of a choice unless he wants to cut even more of his fenders off.

Yes, they are the same. I stole some outers from an 10b as well.

Good to see Flint is going FF. :fsj:

W/T fender flares take care of a lot of problems with these axles.

I was referring to the 10 bolt needing to be changed to SUA, where the J-20 axle is a bolt in and would just need parts to complete... ;)

J20 axle is not bolt in really. Needs new perches welded on. But what I mean is with SOA, he does not have to cut his fenders. With SUA he is going to, WT fenders may be enough to clear the 35's he has. Although he would also need stock height springs to go SOA, rather than his lift springs.

Thanks ClovisMan. WOOT! I am getting it.

Wow, all this other speculation... I didn't say what it was for and will leave details for later. ;)

I just want the outer assemblies, the rest will be scrap. 8-)

When putting the axle together, it's very easy to go with the JB7 heavy duty brakes. The front 10b came with either JB6 or JB7 brakes. The JB7 is a slightly bigger rotor with calipers and pads to match. They bolt on to any 10b or 8 lug D44. You will need to press the studs out of the hub to swap rotors (or buy a whole rotor/hub assembly).

I swapped the JB7 brakes onto my J20 axles when I was upgrading Truck Norris. The parts are relatively cheap and the labor is easy while the axle is out. And I can still fit 16" wheels with no problem.

Check out my gear ratio calculator

If you can't fix it with a hammer or duct tape you have an electrical problem.

Or just go with a Dana 60. The calipers/rotors are HUGE compared to an 8 lug D44. It's already SOA as well...

Thanks for that news Roy. The J20 axle is not complete so this makes for a cost affective way to finish it. The GM 10 bolt housing, gears and inner shafts will make fodder for the next scrap run. This axle will be going in Luna (we also call her old fugly) which is on stock D44s w/3.07 gears. The rear will be a Dodge D60. Got this stuff through Jerry from Jon. When it is done, the SOA 6 lug D44 will be up for sale.

I fetched that GM axle today. Now we have most the stuff we need to put 8 lug axles on Luna Wag (old fugley).

Dodge D60 and GM axle donor for the J20 axle.
