'84 grand wagoneer - replace rear bench with front seats?

Post by wimsurf »

Hey, I have a crazy idea, I want my '84 grand wagoneer to become a very comfy cruiser (offroad is nearly impossible in northern Europe, we do not get much further than a beach or forest road) so besides the tech changes to drive relatively fast (75MPH) over euro highways reliably I want to do some necessary interior modifications:
in the front, I'm going to convert the stock low back seats to Australian spec highback front seats like these:

Now for the back, I want my teenager kids to sit a lot comfier than now, and I was thinking to convert the US-spec front seats of '85 and up (so with removable headrests) so they fit the rear space between the wheel wells. I have been loosely measuring, but with minor fabrication, this should fit including the centre armrest/half seat part.

has anyone done that? Does anyone has pictures of that?

That is a good idea. There are only 4 bolts on the bottom of each seat. It should be easy to make a bracket for them to attach to.

Find a comfortable seating angle and build the bracket to fit.

That's the Australian cherokee. The xj cherokee didn't come to Australia till later so the sj based cherokee got significant interior upgrades

The rear is pretty flat so building a bracket should be pretty easy. I would love to see pics when you are done.

One downside is you won't have the ability to 'flip up' the entire rear seat for more cargo room when you need it.

I haven’t done any measuring, but I doubt you’ll be able to fit the center armrest jump seat in there too. It’s a lot narrower back there due to the wheelhouses. But I would love to see what you come up with!

Ok, no pictures yet but the start is there: I have sourced some good working front seats that i am taking apart to the frame. Next step is building the proper foam so I can shape them to the Australian spec high back.

For the back bench replacement I’m going a slightly different route:
I’ll keep the bench and will add some headrests. Simple and looking more stock.

Once I have some progress on the front seats I’ll post back with pictures.
