Questions on 700r4 swap

Post by rlm2550 »

I am swapping out a t400/d20 for a 700r4/np208 pass drop in a 78 Cherokee Chief..
1. If anyone has done this, was there a lot of modifications done to the crossmember?
2. In ref to the front output on the 208, the drive shaft uses a 1310 ujoint while the 208 used a larger one. How did you solve this? A different input flange???
3. Was there a lot of removing/ lengthening of the driveshafts??
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Now mind you, I have a 350 Chevy, so its going to be a bit different, but w/ my 700R4, I ended up moving the crossmember back to the rearward set of holes, and drilled 2 new holes in the middle of the crossmember where the motor mount bolts up. You will most likely be able to do the same. If you do, you will need to switch to a different front and middle parking brake cables (I believe its from a 6cyl manual trans model?). I got mine from RockAuto.

Im using the Jeep 208 (drivers drop), so I can't help w/ the u joint question. But yes, driveshafts will all need to be redone.

Do you already know what AMC bolt pattern to 700R4 adapter you're using?

I bolted a 700r4 to a 360. I also used the rear holes for the crossmember. Exhaust will have to be custom built to deal with the bellhousing.

I adapted my Jeep 208 to the trans.

Driveshafts required rework.

Double check the starter ring on the flex plate with the starter installed. It was off on both of the ones they sent me and it chewed up my starter teeth and flex plate teeth.

I worked with them to get a 401 specific flex plate that actually works right after I had my old 401/TH400 flex plate drilled for the smaller torque converter. Hopefully they get it right.
