Ok for starters I am not much of a motor guy. I know my way around them somewhat and even rebuilt the engine in my wagon before letting it sit for the last 12 years. I am now finishing it for my fifteen yr. old daughter as her first vehicle.
I noticed a lot of places I have caped or plugged vaccuum lines and started wondering if maybe I should fix these. I also removed the smog stuff back then too! Figure thats where the caps and plugs were from.
Pulled a video off YouTube and watched this guy pretty much rip all the vac lines and junk out (there is actually a motor under all that crap!) Guess im asking just how much crap can I get rid of and still have a reliable motor?
This applies to if you are running the factory carb, air cleaner housing, cruise control, and no EGR.
What's needed:
Ported vacuum off the carb to the distributor.
Vacuum from the carb to the choke pulloff solenoid.
Manifold vacuum to the carb power valve. (center front bottom port)
Manifold vacuum to the coffee can on the drivers fender for the cruise control.
Manifold vacuum to the toilet tank float on the firewall for the HVAC an transfer case shifter.
Vacuum off the carb for the thermal flapper valve in the air cleaner housing.
All other vacuum lines can be deleted.
I will search for pics that I have for what port on the carb does what.
1977 Cherokee S, Ford 5.0, 5 speed, BW 1356, 33 x 10.50 BFG's. No longer my DD.
2007 Mercury Milan, 2.3L, 5-speed, now my DD. 29 mpg average.
So If i follow the two diagrams i saw..i could get my Wag back up and running? Keep in mind the cruise control is not working and will be taken off and I dont use the air cleaner hoses either...
Vacuum off the carb for the thermal flapper valve in the air cleaner housing.
Just another opinion... but I unhooked/capped the thermal flapper valve in my air cleaner. I don't run the hot air riser tube on my engine -- since it never really gets that cold around here.
The fresh air flapper is the one that I kept hooked up -- it's the one that completely closes off the air cleaner when the engine is off. I also used manifold vacuum for it -- if you use carb/ported vacuum the flapper will be closed at idle.
