Rear drive shaft question

Post by Hendo2.5 »

I am thinking about converting a j10 lwb to swb. It will have a 6” spring lift. Will I still be able to use the lwb stock drive shaft?

Unlikely, I would guess. There's about 12" difference in the wheelbase, I doubt you'll need that much extra driveshaft from a 6" lift. I would guess 2-3" extra probably?

You could certainly have the longer shaft cut down, that is usually pretty reasonable to have done. Much cheaper than having a longer shaft made.

Are there any drive shafts from another vehicle that are know to be a plug and play drive shaft for a short bed with a 6” lift? Like one off another type of truck?

That's a pretty specific set of criteria, and there really aren't many of us here that run a 6" of lift. Your best bet to find something stock would be to get everything setup the way you want it, measure the shaft length you're actually going to need (since it will vary some from vehicle to vehicle), and start poking around junk yards.

I plan to grab a shaft from a Ford E250/350 van or F series truck. They're plenty long and aluminum, easy to have cut down to length and rebalanced.
