That's an AMC six cylinder. There is a build date code stamped into the engine block near the distributor that will tell you the displacement and compression ratio. Look on page GE-10 of the J-Series parts catalog here http://oljeep.com/edge_parts_man.html
Pre-71 AMC 199/232 is easily identified by the starter on the driver's side. Jeep never put the 199 in any of its vehicles.
