Looking for pictures/advice for 700r4/np208 swap.

Post by Cataldo »

Well I wound up getting a NP208 for my 700r4, it was cheap and in good shape. I'll still rebuild it though. Since I have to buy new yokes for the drive shafts I'll tap the rear output and bolt on the flange.

I am wondering what you all have done with regards to clocking the t case as well as cross member location/modification/replacement.

Thanks
Jay

I used the Novak adapters for the 360 to the transmission (and later I was able to swap over to the 401 with just a different flex plate). And then the Novak adapter for my stock Jeep 208 to the chevy transmission (which has you swap in a new 27 spline input shaft into the Jeep case).

The engine to trans adapter is fairly straightforward. The adapter ring bolts up to the block, the flex plate bolts to the crank. There are 3 spacers to go between the engine flex plate and torque converter, along with the right bolts. All part of the kit.

The issue is getting the bolts together for the starter. There are I think 3 different ways to do it according to the instructions. None of them are what I would call an "ideal" setup and all are a compromise. I also don't like how the bottom most bolt holes on the block line up with the 700R4. I ended up going with a smaller diameter grade 8 bolt to go through both holes. But it's together and seems to be holding.

The rear mount is easy. The SJ frame comes with two sets of holes for the crossmember. The front holes are for the V8 with any of the transmissions, the rear are for the straight 6 since the back of the engine is further back. With the V8 in the stock location, the rear of the 700R4 drops down just right so you can use the factory rear holes for the crossmember. It's as close to bolt-in as you could ask for.

As far as clocking, the Novak adapter for the Jeep 208 sets it in just about the stock mounting rotation, which is what I liked. If you have a Chevy 208, you'll want a factory Chevy adapter since the rotation of the bolt pattern between the two 208's is different.

The shifter will need to be adapted. The PNRD21 shifter in the factory column won't let you shift down into 1st gear. And it may even have the detents off by a little, keeping it from working properly. I punted and bought a Lokar shifter that bolts directly to the transmission and has a floor shifter sticking straight up into the cab. It almost looks like a manual trans floor shifter. It works fine. But I'm working on an idea to take the guts from a GM steering column that had a PNRD321 shifter in the column and swap it into the FSJ column, along with an aftermarket linkage between the column and the trans. We'll see how that turns out.

Almost forgot. The factory Y Pipe won't fit with the 700R4. It will hit the flange on the bell housing. So you have to figure out what you want to do about that.

Excellent advice.

It is a chevy 208, should have mentioned that. Currently I have a 350 sbc in it, eventually I want to swap in a 401. I am possibly going to pick up a 360 this weekend to get all of the small parts and possibly build that.

Currently it is a chevy 350 with chevy th400 with q trac output shaft.
