So I bought my 1987 J20 to use as a tow rig for my XJ and general truck use/DD. I have access to a cheap 350 (buddy bought a 93 2500 with 350/4l80E/241). It was a TBI 350 but I've had the intake off and it's one of the blocks machined and ready for the stock roller cam setup. I also have available to me some cheap vortec heads from the same friend.
I live in a small town and I once pulled an NV4500 from a 1993 chevy work truck with a V6. Sounds crazy but it's true. Well that tranny didn't get used, sold it with the truck I built and now 6 years later that trans is for sale again haha. So it will bolt up to the engine and 241 Tcase. (241 is driver drop too which works for my setup)
So my question is feasibility and cost. I have a stroker in my XJ that I built. But I'm curious about items specific to this build. I am aware of what's involved generally speaking with an engine swap.
The 350 would have a very basic rebuild, along with vortec heads, slap em on, keep it carb'd, and try to make something close to 400 lb ft of TQ with a roller cam.
-Can you run stock SBC cast manifolds in a FSJ? Or do I have to buy headers for the conversion?
-Will the NV4500 shifter sit in an okay spot?
-I have a manual J10 parts rig that I can take clutch pedal from. I hear I would need to run hydroboost brakes to fit a clutch master cylinder to rock a hydraulic clutch? Is it possible to run mechanical clutch linkage with the NV4500?
-Any large substantial hurdles that would make this difficult?
I have the vortec 350 in mine from a 2000 escalade. Kept the tbi though. I think it puts out something like 325ft lbs from the factory. Smokes my tires at the red lights.
Anyway, yes, the stock headers fit (at least in my 81 wagoneer) but getting the exhaust pipes around the trans took a little creativity. Also, the 4l60 fits just fine too... Not sure about the manual though.
If you stick with anything AMC (V8 or I6), an AX-15 or NV3550 are both good options. Both plenty strong for a mild build, though they may not hold up to extreme towing or abuse.
