Better blower motor

Post by Phils67 »

Has anyone here found a blowor motor that is direct bolt in for early FSJs that moves more volume than stock?

You can adapt a later air box with the multi speed fan. Not sure if there are any bolt ins using the stock box that you have.

But first I would check for air leaks. The stock air tubes going to the defroster always dry rot. And you may have air leaks in other areas that reduce the amount of air going out the vents.

All the ducting and vents are new and sealed well. The motor is just tired, its AT LEAST a 25 year old motor. Winter is coming soon and even though I don't take it out once the snow comes I still drive it occasionally. I know Jeep shared alot of parts with GM. Are there any better options other than a stock replacement?

I don't know about stock replacements for the blower motor, but you may check and see what voltage it is getting to make sure it's getting a full 12V. Maybe add a relay to it to see if that helps? I know my blower does not blow very hard, but it puts out some serious hot air. I have to turn it off after a while in the winter time. Also, how are your door seals etc in the truck? May try just adding some insulation in certain places.

You did open it up and remove all the leaves plugging the core?

Sounds like you did since you mention sealing the ducting and all but if all that was only on the inside of the firewall...

I believe a blower from a Jeep YJ is a direct upgrade. But that is a 20 year old design as well.

Voltage is perfect. Every seal on the cab is new. All firewall holes and things are plugged. Heater core inlet and outlet are sealed tight where they protrude the heater box.

Spotless inside. Heater box is perfectly sealed. Vents, ducts, etc all new remanufactured replacements or NOS.

Any blower that is a direct plug-n-play upgrade with zero modification is what I am looking for. The cab and heat system are fine except for an old worn blower motor. And yeah, YJs haven't been around since my Sophmore year. Makes me feel old too!!

I want to say '80s K5 Blazer blowers were a bolt in upgrade for the YJ heaters. Might be worth measuring for.

I put one in from a mid 80's chevy as well. Not sure if they motors changed from 67 to 78 but the chevy one did bolt up. I might have drilled one hole. Can't remember. However it required a 3/8"-1/2" or so spacer. The squirrel cage is bigger. Not really sure if it blew more air.....i wasn't impressed.

I know the square body Chevy motors are an upgrade used for the CJ's. I installed one in my 81 CJ-5. I had to enlarge the hole a bit, but that was it.
