I have a J-200 Thrift side truck with 11" brakes. I also have a 5 lug Dayna 60-2 track loc rear end that I want to put in, it had 12" brakes. I built 1/2" thick adaptors for the 11" backing plate, and turned out the bore in the in the backing plate to fit the brarings. The problem I have is every thing is tight ( brakes and assorted springs) behind the axle flange to the backing plate. I want to take out the 1/2" spacer to get more working space. Has anyone downsized the 12" brakes to 11" on this axle? What parts did you use>

You might look into MOPAR Dana 60-2 brakes. They used them in several big block muscle cars. Pretty sure those where 11" brakes.

I don't know about any other Mopar applications but I do know the 67 Charger w/D60 had 11x2.5" brakes. The lug pattern for drums is 5x4.5" however.

Best option is a disk conversion, but i"m interested to hear how this turns out.

Does the dana 44 backing plate bolt on? I was under the impression they were totally different.

He is using an adapter to make the D44 backing plate bolt up.

To my knowledge, there aren't any disc brake kits for a Jeep D60-2. I know they exist for chrysler car D60-2's, but they use a different bolt pattern.

Try mounting the backing plates without the spacer and use a drum that's 1/2 deeper. Early 80's to 93 half ton Dodge could work, but the center register bore will need to be enlarged which is pretty straightforward lathe work. I was getting ready to mock up this setup to replace the disk conversion when my truck was hit.

TSM MFG out of Colorado Springs CO makes a disk conversion kit and so can any of us.

Buy some weld on Caliper brackets for GM calipers from Speedway Motors.

1985 F150 4wd front rotors

Either 1978 Wagoneer front calipers (no E-Brake provision)
Or some Cadillac Eldorado rear calipers (not sure on the year) if you want parking brakes.

Anybody who suggests ElDorado calipers has either never owned a set, is a pathological liar, or should be charged with attempted murder. They really are that bad.

I have heard they are terrible to adjust, any better suggestion?

One of these days, somebody needs to make a kit that uses the internal drums that most newer vehicles have for a parking brake.

At this point I am going to try and modify some 88 ford f150 rear drums. I will need to enlarge the center bore and remove some of the inner lip on the drum. With this set I will remove the spacers I built. I also looked at dodge van/ truck drums, would be similar but I would have to remove even more on the backside of the drum lip.
I am hoping my lathe is large enough to turn the drums. I am currently building a fixture to turn out the center bore and cut the backside lip.
It looks like everything I looked at so far is going to require turning out the center bore.
I have thought about disk brakes however I am afraid disc brakes in the rear and drums in the front will continue to skid the back first and give me the scary ride I already have.

Did you look at Ford D60-2 drums that were used on vans up through the 90's?

The 8 lug drums are still in production.
The 8 lug drum would fit if they had the correct lug pattern.

See where I'm going with this yet?

Get some drums from a J4700 or J4800 and redrilled them 5 lug. They're hub-centric anyway, so if the bolt pattern is slightly off or has an overlapped hole it's not that big of a deal.
