coil on plug set up?

Post by Rinkle_Stinkle »

a friend of mine mentioned the coil on plug set up and it got me thinking is that possible on the amc 360 and what benefit would it have.

has anyone done it?

You can really only do coil on plug on an engine that has hemi style heads where the plug is in the center of the valve cover away from the exhaust.

You could do coil per plug, like GM uses on their V8s. Where you have a short 6" or so spark plug wire with a coil dedicated to each spark plug. But, you would most likely have to write your own engine management software, or try to modify software from a more recent GM engine that uses this setup. And then you would have all that work, without much gain.

Look in the EFI forum on the ifsja.org forum. I've forgotten the builder's sig, but it's there and done with Megasquirt. Realize this will only work with EFI when you trigger from a tooth wheel on the crank. But yeah, it's been done. Advantage? Well, I'm not sure how much more advantage you get beyond the EFI itself, but the trigger wheel is more accurate than the tach signal from your distributor. Again, not sure how large an advantage this is quantitatively. Modern engine refinements are driven by performance, emissions and economy, and if the main advantage is lower emissions, you may not see any visible gains from specific "modern" improvements.
