np 246 gm transfer case question

Post by 81waggy »

Into my 81 Wagoneer I put a TBI Vortec 350, 4l60e, & 246gm drive train from a 2000 Escalade...or more accurately, I paid someone to do it. This includes the push button 4x4 shifter, wiring, etc. I have manual locking hubs, not QT.

Here's my problems...

1. There's no power running to the 4x4 switch allowing me to control the TC. Right now its either in 2w Hi or 4w hi.

2. There is a ton of wiring under my dash now because of the control module needed to go between the push button switch and TC.

I'd like to eliminate the control module and all the wires and add my own 2wd/4wd control switches...like a custom toggle panel or something. I built a center console with a floor shifter for the trans and would prefer not to just swap in a new transfer case. There isn't a whole lot of room for another shifter in there.

or

I had an np208 with a cracked housing so had to get rid of it, but the jeep's floor shifter is still there. Is there a TC that could connect to it?

I figure its a long shot but worth the ask.

Not sure you can swap the t-case easily. The engines ECU gets its speed from the t-case's output. It uses this to know the speed of the vehicle and thereby when to shift the transmission as such.

If the shifting doesn't work, I would go back to the shop that did the work and make them fix it.

You may be able to modify the 246 to use mechanical linkage. Depends how the electronic shifter hooks up and whether it is integrated or not.

Those 246 TCs are nothing but headaches now that they're hitting nearly 20 years old. You could swap in a 241 that came behind a 4l60e, and it will be floor shifted. You'll need the wiring harness for the 241. You can ditch the TCCM and the harness for the 246 in the process.

I knew the 241 was probably going to be the easiest option, just didn't want to get into the headache pulling on from the junk yard, installing, and hope all is right.

I was hoping the little servo motor that is controlled by the tccm and buttons could be rewired to be controlled by toggle switches or something.
