AMC 20 disc brake conversion

Post by Grand_Wag_85 »

Anybody know of a good DIY route for rear discs on an AMC 20? Not looking to spend $600+ on one of the many conversion kits out there.

I believe anything that you can get fot the D44 will fit the M20/AMC20. The M20 rear uses the same backing plates and maybe the same drums.

That kit uses K-20 rotors and they're 8 lug. I'm assuming your J10 is 6 lug.

You will also not have any provisions for a parking brake/ebrake with that kit, unless you buy the expensive Eldorado calipers.

I'd put Isuzu brakes on it. But apparently I'm a weirdo.

Why are you a weirdo? Because you are weird or use Isuzu brakes?

Yes, 6 lug for WT Cherokee.

How expensive are the ElDorado calipers? Any idea what 6 lug rotors might work?

Tell me about these Isuzu brakes, haven't heard about them yet.

Both?

Last I checked the Eldorado calipers were expensive, but looking at them right now is seems you can get them for about $100 per side but they're missing the ebrake arm. I'm not sure if they're definitely the right ones, but it should be a '78 ElDorado, unless my memory is fried.

I do not know of a 6 lug rotor that is the right width for the GM calipers. But, perhaps a front rotor off a Wagoneer would be? It's not something I ever thought of.

Isuzu stuff is 6 lug, but I actually used Explorer rotors when I did it because it was going in a Comanche (5x4.5 pattern). It could as easily have been done with the Isuzu rotor on a 6 lug axle.

These are 1990 Trooper calipers off their corporate 12 bolt axle (which is actually a really good axle). 90-whatever Explorer rotors, you do have to grind the lip on the inside of them or it fouls on the caliper. But like I said, the Trooper is a 6 lug normally, you can just use those rotors.

You could also look at newer Isuzu stuff. They ran a disk brake D44 when they went away from their (better) corporate 12 bolt axle, so there's a chance it would be fairly plug and play. There's some info on Pirate about that axle, but I've never dealt with one.

Those brakes are clean enough to eat off of!

These are the calipers I found:

Most of the kits use late '80s-early '90s Chevy 4wd truck front rotors.

Let me know what you end up using for brackets as I'll be doing the conversion, too, except I'll be using Cherokee front calipers.

Will do dude! BTW Good to see you've still got the FSJ habit ;)

Probably going to go with those brackets I posted.....If you're using Cherokee calipers what are you using for rotors?

I bought an El Dorado axle to get the brakes for my project. One caliper is in front of the axle which upset my sense of symmetry so I didn't use them.

999 Off-Road does but they won't sell just the brackets, which is what I need.

Hey, by any chance would those Isuzu disc have enough room to cut 8x6.5 bolt pattern? To install on a 8 lug Dana 60? Presently, you have to use a vented rotor that is too wide for the Elderado calipers.

See, I would totally run their kit if they'd sell it without calipers or if they would sell just the caliper brackets. I don't need/want the ebrake calipers.
